John de Lancie's father, of the same name, was principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years.
De Lancie was also the writer/director/host of "First Nights," an adult concert series at Disney Hall with the LA Philharmonic which explored the life and music of Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mahler, Schumann, and Prokofiev.

John de Lancie then went on to Kent State University where he immersed himself in the drama program and, yes, he was there during the "Troubles." After Kent came the Juilliard Drama School, and after Juilliard de Lancie joined the American Shakespeare Festival at Stratford.
John's television acceptance speech has become a classic and it is still aired on highlight reels fifteen years later as he thanks, "in order of importance," those elements instrumental to his success: "props, cue cards and the lunch truck."

He was writing in 1979, two years after he left the orchestra; it wasn't until he was 10 years into his retirement that de Lancie - by then one of the most highly respected oboists on the planet - was able to perform and record "his" concerto.
John de Lancie came from a musical Californian family: his father, an electrical engineer, was an amateur clarinettist and his brother a violinist.
Richard Woodhams, de Lancie's student and his successor in the principal's chair, explained, "You could immediately recognise it was the Philadelphia Orchestra from his oboe playing - it was sort of bright and dark at the same time, and had a kind of suppleness to it."
