The title of Baron de Ros (pronounced "Roose") is the most ancient baronial title in the Peerage of England.
The title was originally held by the de Ros family until the death of the eleventh Baron in 1508, when it was inherited by his nephew, Sir George Manners.
The abeyance was terminated in favour of her eldest daughter, Una Ross (née Dawson) in 1943, and again went into abeyance upon her death in 1956.

His son John, 9th earl (1638-1711), a partisan of the revolution of 1688, received the Princess Anne at Belvoir Castle on her flight from London; after the accession of Anne to the throne she created him marquess of Granby and duke of Rut and in 1703.
His grandson John, the 3rd duke (1696-1779), was the father of John Manners, marquess of Granby, a distinguished soldier, whose son Charles, 4th duke of Rutland (1754-1787), succeeded his grandfather.
His eldest son, John Henry, 5th duke (1778-1857), was " the duke " in Disraeli's Coningsby; the latter's two sons, the marquess of Granby and Lord John Manners, figuring in the same novel as " the marquis of Beaumanoir " and " Lord Henry Sidney " respectively.

The barony of 'de Ros of Hamlake, Truibut and Belvoir' (sometimes spelled Ros, Roos or de Roos) was created by Simon de Montfort with a writ of summons to the House of Lords for Robert de Ros (1223-1285) in 1264.
The barony of Ros was restored to the Manners family when Francis Manners, the 6th earl (1578-1632), inherited it in 1618 from his cousin William Cecil (1590-1618).

The Earldom was one of the most valuable in Scotland and Clan Ross led all other Highland clans in prestige and fighting power.
John, tenth Earl and fourth Lord of the Isles, forfeited the Earldom to the Scottish crown in 1476, after conviction for treason.
