Joachim Lelewel - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The characteristics of Lelewel as an historian are great research and power to draw inferences from his facts; his style is too often careless, and his narrative is not picturesque, but his expressions are frequently terse and incisive.
His Polish fervor rarely upset his historian's accuracy (see for example his writings on the legendary explorer John of Kolno).
He introduced the history of Poland as seen by a Pole, to a wide European audience in the 19th century, when Poland was in deep eclipse as a nation.
