The SF Site Featured Review: The Alchemist's Door
John Clute observes in his Encyclopedia of Fantasy that "LG is a deceptively quiet writer." However, with The Alchemist's Door the author is possibly too deceptive or quiet.
The premise to this novel, announced in the author's introductory, is a meeting between the famous English alchemist, John Dee, and his contemporary in the hermetic sciences, Rabbi Judah Loew:
In her adherence to the alchemist's recorded and chronological travels, the author risks diverting the reader from the central impetus of her narrative, with the end result appearing pendulous to the development of her plot.

  Francis Bacon & John Dee
John Dee(1527-1608) was a fascinating genius, considered a magus, philosopher and alchemist who captured the attention of the royal courts and best minds throughout Europe.
Bacon's observation of the mis-treatment bestowed upon Dee by James served to reinforce that it was a different era and that the need to practice that Shakespeare maxim, "Discretion is the better part of valor" was imperative to anyone with a sweet disposition toward magic and mathematics or a secret society.
Consequently, like Dr. John Dee, his early tutor, he was fascinated by mathematical cypher in both its numeric and geometric forms, and with its magical use.

The Alchemist is nestled in the Green Mountain town of Waterbury, Vermont.

Instinctively aware of the importance of stylistic individuality, and disillusioned with the stagnant metal scene of the late Eighties, ALCHEMIST was formed with the purpose of creating original, emotive, hard-driving music that would not only provide metal listeners with a fresh perspective, but attract music lovers usually not interested in metal's extremities.
During late 1999/early 2000, ALCHEMIST finalized a distribution deal with Dutch label Displeased Records for the European release of their latest opus 'Organasm.' ALCHEMIST viewed 'Organasm' as a rebirth in both innovation and songwriting.

The Alchemist's Tale by John Granger   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The alchemist, like all traditional or non-modern people, understood man to be essentially spirit (as man is created by the Spirit), then soul, then physical body, rather than the reverse.
In saying this I am not seeking to deny that alchemists also knew and practiced metallurgical procedures such as the purification and alloying of metals; their real work, however, for which all these procedures were merely the outward supports or “operational” symbols, was the transmutation of the soul.
The Western alchemist by attempting to “kill” the ingredients, to reduce them to the materia prima, provokes a sympatheia between the “pathetic situations” of the substance and his innermost being.

 The Hermetic Tradition
Alchemists tried to turn base metals into gold or to create an elixir of immortality; things that are impossible, or at any rate, that are impossible with chemistry.
These views are not mutually exclusive; historians of science acknowledge that even alchemists who were clearly engaged in pragmatic chemistry may also have attached some mystical significance to their work, while cultural historians admit that the alchemical mystics could have employed real metals and fires in their rites.
Additionally, alchemists know that immortality is a prize for the few, and not an attribute shared by all human beings.
