CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. John the Evangelist
John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the Greater.
John alone remained near his beloved Master at the foot of the Cross on Calvary with the Mother of Jesus and the pious women, and took the desolate Mother into his care as the last legacy of Christ (John 19:25-27).
After the Resurrection John with Peter was the first of the disciples to hasten to the grave and he was the first to believe that Christ had truly risen (John 20:2-10).

St. John the Evangelist, One of Freemasonry's Patron Saint
John the Baptist, by announcing the approach of the Redeemer, and by the mystic lustration by water to which he subjected his disciples, might well be considered as the true founder of the Roman Church.
John was exiled to the island of Patmos.
John the Evangelist is recognized the world over as the apostle of love and light, the bringer of comfort to the grief-stricken, courage to the weak, help to the helpless, and strength to the falling.

 St John Evangelist
An agonised John heard the final words from the Cross, entrusting to him the care of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, who was uppermost in the thoughts of her Son in his last moments of earthly life (John 19.26).
John remained close to the Mother of the Saviour throughout her lifetime and was at her side when she breathed her last on August 15, officiating at her burial in the Garden of Gethsemane, a spot made sacred by her Son years before.
John withdrew from the gruelling pace of preaching in favour of the solitude of the beautiful island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea.

 St John The Evangelist
St John The Evangelist, who is styled in the gospel, The beloved disciple of Christ," and is called by the Greeks "The Divine," was a Galilean, the son of Zebedee and Salome, and younger brother of St. James the Great, with whom he was brought up to the trade of fishing.
John, directed by the instinct of love, knew him and gave notice to Peter: they all dined with him on the shore; and when dinner was ended, Christ walked along the shore questioning Peter about the sincerity of his love, gave him the charge of his church, and foretold his martyrdom.
John celebrated the Christian Pasch on the 14th day of the moon, agreeing as to time with the Jewish passover; but was so far from holding the Jewish rites of obligation in the New Law, that he condemned that heresy in the Nazarites.

 CIN - JOHN THE EVANGELIST
St John the Evangelist, like Shakespeare, has something about him which irresistibly attracts the crank, and probably more books have been written and more wildly fantastic theories advanced about his writings and their authorship than about any other writer who ever lived.
The mystical theologian is there-in the Prologue (John 1:1ff), the Discourse in the upper room (John 13 to 17) and the First Epistle.
It is as well to remember, of course, that at least fifty years-half a century of prayer and meditation, of teaching and debate-separate St John the Apostle from St John the Evangelist.

St John the Evangelist by DONATELLO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
As soon as the St Mark had been finished Donatello hastened to complete the St John which, together with the other Evangelists by Nanni di Banco, Niccolo Lamberti and Bernardo Ciuffagni, were to be placed on the facade of Santa Maria del Fiore in the tabernacle at the side of the central door.
Particularly remarkable are the saint's acute and penetrating expression, and the realistic treatment of his open hand on the book.
In 1587 the St John, along with the other Evangelists, was removed from the facade and placed inside the Cathedral, whence it was finally moved to its present place in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo.

 John 1:6-8 and 19-28 -- 3rd Sunday in Advent
Scholars say (and I think they're right): The heavy emphasis on John the Baptist NOT being the Messiah here in the opening chapter of this gospel signals that there must have been a "John IS the Messiah" group on the scene at the time John-the-Evangelist was writing this gospel.
That John did have disciples already during Jesus' lifetime is testified in the NT Gospels, for example when John's disciples come to Jesus to ask him if He really is the Messiah, or "should we look for another?"
You need the material between the two parts of the lectionary text (6-8 and 19-28) to answer that, to see/hear why it is important to have Jesus, and not the Baptist, for your Messiah.
