John the Ripper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John the Ripper is a free password cracking software tool.
John the Ripper is a perfectly safe program to install and run on your computer.
If you are running a multi-user system, you should make sure you are shadowing your password file such that the hashes are not visible; however even if you are not, not installing John will not prevent a malicious user from running John on their own computer with your hashes.

John the Ripper 1.7, by Solar Designer
In particular, John the Ripper 1.7 is a lot faster at Windows LM hashes than version 1.6 used to be.
John the Ripper 1.7 also improves on the use of MMX on x86 and starts to use AltiVec on PowerPC processors when cracking DES-based hashes (that is, both Unix crypt(3) and Windows LM hashes).
In fact, John the Ripper includes an external "cracking mode" (defined in a C-like language available for use from the configuration file) to demonstrate this kind of weakness of one such password generator ("Strip", which is short for "Secure Tool for Recalling Important Passwords").

Let John the Ripper Audit Your Passwords: Security Basics | WatchGuard Technologies, Inc.
John the Ripper (JtR) is a free password-cracking program popular amongst hackers and security experts alike.
JtR employs methods such as dictionary attacks, where it tries thousands of words from a wordlist in hopes of finding a match, or brute force, where it systematically experiments with millions of character combinations until it stumbles upon a password.
Testing John the Ripper on your network may initially present you with some bad news, but if your passwords are weak, you want to know it before an attacker does.

John the Ripper 1.7.0.2 is out adding a fix for a long-standing bug in the rule preprocessor which caused some duplicate characters to not be omitted on 64-bit platforms.
It is now possible to run John the Ripper on OpenVMS (both Alpha and VAX) targeting any of the supported hash types, and to crack OpenVMS passwords (SYSUAF.DAT) when running on any of the supported platforms, due to patches and VMS executables contributed by Jean-loup Gailly.

John is pretty minimal on ouput -- it doesn't include the time it took to break the password.

The reason why John the Ripper (GUI) didn't find the other 2 uid password is because they are asterixed out in netinfo.

Casebook: Jack the Ripper - John Arnold
John Arnold was an enigmatic character involved in the investigation of the Pinchin Street torso murder of 10 September 1889 - indeed for a time he was a top suspect in the case.
Swanson completed his report by stating that a woman was found "insensible" in High Street at 12 midnight on the night of 7 September, and that this occurrence may have given rise to the false report of another Jack the Ripper murder.
Apparently, John Arnold had been known to the police in the district, as he had a reputation for drinking and gambling.

LWN: John the Ripper 1.7 announced
John's "raw" performance at LM hashes is now similar to or even slightly better than that of commercial Windows password crackers such as LC5, -- and that's despite John trying candidate passwords in a more sophisticated order based on statistical information (resulting in typical passwords getting cracked earlier).
John 1.7 also improves on the use of MMX on x86 and starts to use AltiVec on PowerPC processors when cracking DES-based hashes (that is, both Unix crypt(3) and Windows LM hashes).
To my knowledge, John 1.7 (or rather, one of the development snapshots leading to this release) is the first program to cross the 1 million Unix crypts per second boundary on a general-purpose CPU.

I am unfortunately going to tell you that you must read the example rules in the original john.ini file as these are well annotated and explain what happens to each word.
Note that any line starting with "#" is an annotation and ignored by JTR, and I (and I suggest you) comment out lines that could be run by adding a semi-colon in front of it so that JTR skips it this time.
