 Barnes & Noble.com - Biography - John Sturges
One of Hollywood's top action directors of the late 1950s and 1960s, John Sturges, for a time, was a name associated almost exclusively with large-scale action-adventure films.
A one-time assistant in RKO's blueprint department, Sturges spent most of his early career in the studio's art department and editing room (an especially productive department, where directors Robert Wise and Mark Robson also got their starts), before joining David O. Selznick as a production assistant and later as an editor.
Sturges then became his own producer, beginning with The Magnificent Seven (1960), a large-scale Western action vehicle adapted from Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954).

John Sturges' final film is one of his best.
Perhaps due to the blue-collar workmanship of his films, no director ever made as many enduringly popular movies as John Sturges while being largely forgotten himself.
Sturges use of no dialogue in several key scenes makes them quite memorable as the reaction shots on Holden, William Demarest and William Campbell tell what is in their minds.

Turner Classic Movies This Month Article
To Sturges, it was a Western composed of pure situational comedy elements, a form of filmmaking that he had not tackled previously, plus the scope of the picture was truly daunting, even for Sturges.
In order to properly promote the film, Sturges released the picture through United Artists as a "road show" picture, a special exhibition showing (usually at a prestigious theater on a reserved-seat basis and at a higher admission price).
The day would usually start beautifully, and then the afternoon storms would come up." Worst of all, a stuntman named Bill Williams was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a wagon while performing a stunt.

Westerns > Western Directors > John Sturges
Clint Eastwood's stardom was supernova, thanks to Dirty Harry; John Sturges, the man behind The Magnificent Seven and a dozen other memorably leathery Westerns, was directing; and Elmore Leonard was the screenwriter.
Novelist Leon Uris wrote the script for this Western directed by John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven) and based on the life and times of Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and his sickly companion, Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas).
The action inevitably leads to the legendary battle between the two heroes and the villainous Clanton gang, but the film is also very much about the conflicts each man faces with women, with one another, and with their own destinies.

Amazon.ca: DVD: Bad Day At Black Rock
What could have been absurd pretentious morass is spared, largely due to the professionalism of John Sturges, displaying all the directorial virtues of craftsmanship, economy, and self-effacement.
One of the first Hollywood films to deal openly with white racism toward Japanese Americans during World War II, this drama directed by 1950s action maestro John Sturges (The Great Escape) stars Spencer Tracy as a one-armed stranger named MacReedy, who arrives in the tiny town of Black Rock on a hot day in 1945.
Casting is the film's principal strength, however: Tracy, the indispensable icon of integrity, and Ryan, the indispensable noir image of spiritual blight, are as creatively unlikely a pairing as Sturges's shotgun marriage of Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen in The Magnificent Seven.

slant // magazine.com: DVD Review - Bad Day at Black Rock
Similar to Robert Aldrich and John Huston, two filmmakers with similar interests in classic, male-centric genres, Sturges knew how to move a story from point A to point B with a modicum of fuss and a healthy measure of gritty grace.
"They're every one of them locked up," says weak-kneed Pete Wirth (John Ericson) about his hotel's rooms, though when coupled with Smith's description of the Japanese as "mad dogs" and confession about his anger over Pearl Harbor (and frustration at not successfully enlisting), the comment also subtly alludes to U.S. wartime incarceration policy.
Bad Day at Black Rock marked MGM's first release shot in Cinemascope, and Sturges, nominated for an Academy Award for the film, transforms the expansive emptiness of his frame into an omnipresent character.
