Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was one of the first members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986).
Berry's musical influences were Nat King Cole, smooth singer and master pianist, Louis Jordan, very much Chuck's model, and Muddy Waters, singer and guitarist vital in the transformation of Delta blues into Chicago blues and the man who introduced Berry to Leonard Chess at Chess Records.
Berry was also the subject of attention in the 1990s for his alleged voyeurism of female guests in his home.

Berry's recording of the song was included on the Voyager Golden Record, attached to the Voyager spacecraft as representing rock and roll among other cultural achievements of humanity.
Although partly autobiographical, the inspiration for the song is said to have been Johnnie Johnson who played the piano and composed several songs with Berry and is considered a major contributor to the unmistakable Berry sound.
In the time-travel movie, Chuck Berry becomes inspired to write the song by Marvin, his cousin, who calls Chuck to hear the "new sound", which is of course Marty playing the song, heavy-metal-shredding style.

In 1944, on a joy ride to Kansas City, Berry and two companions were arrested and found guilty of armed robbery; each was sentenced to 10 years in the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men at Algoa, near Jefferson, Missouri.
A first trial, in which Berry was found guilty, was overturned after the judge was found to have uttered racist remarks; a second trial in October 1961 arrived at the same verdict, however, and Berry was sentenced to 3 years in jail and a $10, 000 fine.

Perhaps the most influential performer in the history of rock 'n' roll, guitarist Chuck Berry was born on October 19, 1926 in St. Louis, Mo. and developed a love of the blues and poetry as a child.
By the early '50s Berry had his own band and was one of the most popular African-American musicians around, though little-known outside of his community.
By the 1980s Berry had slowed down, but he remained as popular as ever among new generations of rock musicians who owed their livelihood to his early innovations.

Chuck Berry has long been criticized for his lack of involvement in the Civil Rights movement and for reinforcing some negative images of fl males, but by presenting himself as an undeniably intelligent and gifted fl at a time when many whites were denying that fls were as intelligent was itself an important contribution.
Apart from Berry's musical contributions, which were formidable, he brought a sense of playful theatricality that was key in defining early on that rock `n' roll, whatever else it was, was fun.
Luckily, though in my and others' opinion Berry is not today given the credit he deserves for his major role in creating rock `n' roll, he has been exceedingly well served by a host of absolutely first rate anthologies.
