Johnny Burke's papers are located in the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (St. John's), in the Memorial University Folklore and Language Archive (St. John's), and in St. John's public libraries.

The team of Burke and Spina then turned out a string of songs that were played by some of the great bands of the day, including Ben Pollack; Paul Whiteman, and Ozzie Nelson.
It is interesting to note that Johnny was the only composer to spend his entire career with just one studio, Paramount Pictures, primarily as a lyricist for Bing Crosby films.
In 1911, Ernie wrote the Lyric to a George Norton song then called "Melancholy", Later, the name was changed to "My Melancholy Baby" and was subsequently recorded by the Paul Whiteman and the Dorsey Brothers orchestras (among others).

Playbill News: The Love Story Behind "Star
Wearing her grandmother's pearl ring into Broadway battle-the barroom brawls of "Donnybrook!"-was not a smart move for Marissa Mason, a high-kicking tavern maid in that 1961 musicalization of "The Quiet Man. "The pearl soon disappeared, but the empty prongs of the setting remained to scratch co-stars who came in contact with her.
The show's songwriter, Johnny Burke, volunteered to replace the pearl; when he returned the ring-presto!-the pearl had turned into a diamond.
The marriage lasted only two-and-a half years-till Burke's death of a stroke at 56-but the lyrics linger on, lighting up the Music Box nightly in a snazzy songbook revue that bounces around the best of Burke's work like a fine-tuned, finely tuned pinball machine.

Songwriting Articles - Shakespear was no Johnny Mercer (Arnold Olenick)
Sometimes the lyric is dreamed up first and the lyricist may make up a dummy tune to guide the composer.
Sometimes a line of a lyric can be improved by adding a word, and adding notes to go with it.
If you'd love to write lyrics, recognize what you'll need to learn about doing it, or you'll never make it.

 Reading Lyrics
And though a collection of lyrics that excludes, say, Bob Dylan or Hank Williams is obviously one that is far from complete, their stories are not the stories we can tell here (or are equipped to tell).
A lyric is one-half of a work, and its success or failure depends not only on its own merits as verse but on its relationship to its music.
Possibly some of the lyrics we have included will not seem worthy to readers who don't know the music that is essential to them—indeed, the brilliance of certain lyrics lies in their perfect, natural marriage to their tunes rather than in their verbal ingenuity; Gus Kahn's "It Had to Be You" is an example.
