Johnny Clegg, most famous for his anti-apartheid activist music, will perform with his latest group in Spaulding Auditorium on Wednesday.
An impressive and refreshing contrast to this general trend is the musician Johnny Clegg, whose contribution to the music scene from the mid-1970s with his band Juluku to the present day with Saluka and various other projects has been staggering.
Clegg's personal involvement with African music during apartheid was at his own risk; he was arrested frequently in violation of the "Group Area's Act," a law forcing races to keep their own residential and recreational areas.

Sipho Mchunu, Clegg's partner in Juluka (Clegg's first and better known band, whose title means "Sweat") and his influence and impetus for many years is not a part of this group, but he features in the show as an important part of the narrative.
Clegg was hot and mainstream in the 1980s - with those examples of his music that were allowed through banning orders, that is. He was the first vocal artist to use Nelson Mandela's name in lyrics, but South Africans only got to hear them after the new democracy had come about.
Special DVD extra features include an interview with Johnny Clegg, "Asimbonanga" performed with Nelson Mandela in Frankfurt, a dance performance of Mantombana with Juluka, a video of Savuka's "Scatterlings of Africa," which was the song featured in the 1989 movie Rain Man, and lyrics from some of their most popular songs.

Vocalist and composer Clegg arrived in South Africa with his family in 1959.
Later, while reading social anthropology at Wits University, Clegg formed a friendship with a migrant worker and musician named Sipho Mchunu, and in 1972 the two began performing together as Johnny and Sipho, forming their first band, the sextet Juluka (Zulu for "sweat") in 1976.
In 1986 Clegg re-emerged fronting a new group, Savuka ("We Have Arisen"), which continued in the direction set out by Juluka and, in the increasingly liberal political climate of South Africa in the late 80s, found it much easier to tour both there and overseas.

DVD Verdict Review - Johnny Clegg With Savuka And Juluka: Live! And More...
In fact, Clegg is something of a musical legend in Africa, and is certainly recognized throughout Europe and Asia, although he has made little to no impact in North America (short of a brief popularity surge in the late '80s).
According to Clegg, he is a "songwriter, dancer, guitarist, and vocalist...in that order." Born in the UK but growing up in South Africa, Clegg's music is upbeat, high-energy and infectious, with heavy African rhythmic influences, a healthy dose of Zulu dancing, dashes of Celtic styling, and liberal amounts of cheesy synthesizers and horn sections.
Clegg started the very first multiracial band in South Africa back in the 1980s, performing Zulu-inspired music with street musicians collected from the alleys of Johannesburg, and in short order became a cultural phenomenon -- an especially difficult feat considering that apartheid was going on at the time.

Clegg found ways around this by performing for Zulu migrant labourers who lived all throughout Johannesburg and gained respect as a competent Zulu guitarist.

Clegg was born in England but has lived in Africa since infancy, and his commingling of those two cultures began in earnest in the '70s, when he formed Juluka, whose interracial lineup (Clegg himself is white) and politically charged songs made for a heady, controversial brew at a time when apartheid was still the rule.

 DVD Review:
I'm a huge fan of Johnny Clegg, ever since I was swept away from the first listen of the opening chants of his album "Cruel Crazy Beautiful World" in 1990.
While I tend to shy away from musicians and artists who are political or at the very least have political motivations, Clegg's music while extremely political doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth.
When you watch this DVD you will hear Clegg's music beautifully recreated on stage, you will recognize the songs and their hooks and most particularly their nuances and idiosyncrasies (thanks to Clegg's band and his own amazing guitar work).

As a young white kid emigrated to South Africa, Johnny Clegg studied Zulu culture, hooked up with guitarist Sipho Mchunu, and began an amazing Afro-pop career—which was still a dangerous move back in 1976.
His initial stint as Johnny Clegg & Juluka still produced some great songs, with “Scatterlings of Africa” a welcome distraction from the brooding Eurorockers of 1983.
There were plenty more bright moments, and Clegg would eventually be honored with a soundtrack appearance in the big-screen whateverfest George of the Jungle.

He not only absorbed the language and rituals of his Zulu brethren, but he formed an integrated band that was itself a slap at the system and that had its songs routinely banned by state radio.
As Clegg explained, it meant "Everything will be right, but when this will be we`re not entirely certain," a mood conveyed by voices that hovered and wailed while Keith Hutchinson`s saxophone darted in and out of the shadows.
Although Clegg often pauses between songs to discuss social issues, his words, like his music, are not pronouncements.
