Rowan Atkinson aka Mr. Bean: DVD: Johnny English (Widescreen Edition)
As bumbling superspy Johnny English, who gains top-level MI-7 clearance after inadvertently causing a colleague's demise, Atkinson breathes life into gags that are too familiar to earn such an amusing revival.
It is Atkinson, as the title character, who helps make this a delightful surprise, along with some pretty funny sequences: for instance, Atkinson having trouble with his tie in a sushi bar, Atkinson involved in a car chase where the car he's in is hanging from the winch of a tow truck.
I think that Johnny English is pretty consistent in doling out the laughs, and that makes it a success as far as I'm concerned.

Johnny English (2003) is a comic movie parodying the James Bond secret agent genre, starring Rowan Atkinson as the incompetent British spy of the title, with John Malkovich, Natalie Imbruglia and Ben Miller, and featuring a unique car chase.
The character of Johnny English himself is based on a similar character called Richard Latham who was played by Atkinson in a series of British television commercials for Barclaycard.

 Johnny English - Uncyclopedia
Although very little is known about "English" as he was called, he did enter the public stage very abruptly during the 2003 botched coronation of Sauvage, and due to a mistake on his part was publically humiliated at the event.
However, English triumphed when a last ditch attempt to stop the crowning took place as he swung from the rails in an attempt to grab the crown before it was placed on Sauvage's head.
This entire affair which shot English into the public imagination was very embarrasing for the entire British establishment and English himself, who had to endure a DVD of himself in a bathroom miming ABBA's "Does Your Mother Know" which was playing at full blast in the background.

English inadvertently disturbs a funeral (thinking it's the bad guys and their ruse) and Bough then shows up and acts as if English has escaped from the asylum and must be talked down from the casket.
English falls down a recently dug hole onto Bough (who was stuck in it) and both then tumble out of it at the bottom.
English and Bough hold guns on some suspects, but when English's clip falls to the floor, the men open fire on them and the agents shoot back (no one is hit).

 Ink 19 :: Johnny English
To tell the truth, Johnny English (making its U.S. debut July 18) is a worldwide smash-hit, and for good reason: the film borrows heavily from Peter Sellers, adds a tiny dash of Roger Moore, and the result is fairly entertaining.
While a few inventively-shot scenes are to be applauded, the rest of Johnny English could use some '60s-style experimental camera-work without stepping on Austin Powers' shoes; likewise, the whole film could have had a whole style-and-substance makeover -- clever direction meeting Atkinson's cleverness -- without incurring a lawsuit from the Edwards camp.
Johnny English is a decent matinee view with some laugh-out-loud moments -- and with a promising shelf-life on DVD -- but it could have been so much more.

TheMovieBoy Review - Johnny English (2003)
There are two spectacularly funny scenes in "Johnny English." The first concerns Johnny confusing a real-life, tear-filled funeral internment and a staged one, with zany results.
As Johnny's loyal assistant, Bough (pronounced "Boff"), Ben Miller (2002's "Birthday Girl") splendidly slides into the part of sidekick, while John Malkovich (1999's "Being John Malkovich") puts on a silly French accent and hams it up as main villain Pascal Sauvage.

Continuity: When Johnny ejects Lorna Campbell from the car, then lands in the pool, you see Bough specifically uncross his legs and reach for his sunglasses, then when Lorna lifts her head from under the water you can see Bough repeat these actions in exactly the same way.

SPLICEDwire | "Johnny English" review (2003) Peter Howitt, Rowan Atkinson, John Malkovich
Americans have made the "Austin Powers" movies their James Bond spoof of choice, but in "Johnny English" the British strike back with native dry-wit buffoon Rowan Atkinson starring as a bumblingly inept secret agent called up from desk duty when his own ineffectual security gets all the country's top spies killed by a single bomb.
In "Johnny English" he plays a third-tier intelligence operative with delusions of grandeur and an amusingly paper-thin facade of poise, which along with the over-pronounced features of his rubbery face is just funny enough to sustain the snickers between out-loud laughs in this hit-and-miss comedy.
What's worse is that the plot falls apart in its climax, which depends not on Johnny English's unsuspected smarts, or even his dumb luck, but on calm, calculating Sauvage blowing his top in "You can't handle the truth!" style and conveniently revealing his megalomania to the entire world live on TV.

Johnny English is yet another spoof on the James Bond franchise, but Edward Shearmur takes his scoring duties a bit more seriously than most parody-composers do.
Shearmur's main theme is full of the brassy jazz action motifs of John Barry's early Bond scores, while also blending in some of the more electronic elements David Arnold has incorporated into the more recent installments, along with a heavy use of electric guitar and percussion along with the brass.
However, in the film itself, it does help to add to English's failures as an agent: the music is as serious as the threat to England.

Johnny English (2003): Rowan Atkinson, Natalie Imbruglia, Ben Miller - PopMatters Film Review
It's hard to imagine the filmmakers have an alternate agenda, because English and the movie that bears his name have similarly simple goals: he wants only to be James Bond, icon of British cool, and the movie wants only to parody the Bond franchise.
There is a sequence in the middle of the film where English mixes up his truth serum and muscle relaxants, and Atkinson's sublimely silly flopping and slurring had me laughing aloud.
For all this, the Johnny English character is rather charming, and occasionally the film rises to Atkinson's level.
