Horton was born in Los Angeles in 1925, the son of sharecropping parents.
Horton started out by playing talent contests throughout Texas, which is where he gained the attention of Fabor Robison, a music manager that was notorious for his incompetence and his scams.
Horton was still alive after the wreck, but he died on the way to the hospital; the other passengers in his car had severe injuries, but they survived.

Johnny Horton will probably be forever linked with New Orleans, but he had a fair amount of songs in the country and rockabilly idioms before unexpectedly dying at the age of 35.
Horton’s first record contract was in 1951 with Cormac and later on the Abbott label, moving in 1952 to Mercury Records.
Horton married Billie Jean Williams, Hank Williams’ widow, in 1953 but she became a country star’s widow a second time when Horton was killed in an auto accident November 5, 1960.

Johnny recorded the Jimmy Driftwoord song "The battle of New Orleans" in 1959 and it became a number 1 hit, it even wound up being the number one song for the entire year.
Johnny was killed in an automobile crash on November 5, 1960, on U.S. Route 79 near the small town of Milano, Texas.

Again, the tone and style Horton brings to the song is an early precursor to the minimal guitar and vocal abilities Johnny Cash would take to the next level.
Johnny Horton deserved a better fate than being killed by a drunk driver in November 1960, but judging by this album, he certainly maximized his time and, more importantly, his talent.

Billie Jean (who later stated that before he left for the last time, Horton kissed her on exactly the same place on the same cheek that Hank Williams had kissed her when he set off for his final trip) became a country star's widow for the second time in 10 years.
Horton, who has been described as the last major star of The Louisiana Hayride, is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bossier City, Louisiana.

I’d always thought of Johnny Horton as a kind of corny country boy, not as a racist fuck.
I used to listen to Johnny Horton when I was a kid because my parents had old Horton records lying around, and I couldn’t ever remember hearing anything even remotely racist (other than references to the “bloody British”).

I used to listen to Johnny when I was just a young kid and I have always loved his music.
