Johnny Micheal ``Mike'' Spann, 32, an officer with the CIA's clandestine service the Directorate of Operations, ``was where he wanted to be: on the front lines serving his country,'' CIA Director George Tenet said in a statement.
Spann, who joined CIA in June 1999, was almost certain to be memorialized with a star on the wall at CIA headquarters that commemorates employees of the spy agency who died in the line of duty.
Spann is survived by his wife Shannon Spann, an infant son, two young daughters, two sisters and his parents Johnny and Gail Spann of Winfield, Alabama, where he grew up.

The troops laid down their weapons and were marched to the same fortress in which Michael and his team had stayed while waiting for Mazar-e-Sharif to be liberated.
Once the smoke cleared and Michael was able to focus his eyes, he realized he was bleeding, but his body and most of his gear were intact.
Michael was grateful to see familiar faces from home on the helicopter.

The CIA has confirmed that Johnny Micheal Spann, known as "Mike," died during a revolt at a fortress near Mazar-i-Sharif where pro-Taliban and al Qaeda prisoners were being held.
Spann's body could not be recovered until the rioting was quelled by U.S. airstrikes and Northern Alliance ground warfare.
Spann did not speak local Afghan languages but was present at the interrogation of the pro-Taliban prisoners by the Northern Alliance, one official said.
