LEAD-IN: Johnny Paul Koroma, the former leader of the AFRC military junta in Sierra Leone, is the latest candidate to declare his desire to run for the presidency on a Peace and Liberation Party ticket in elections scheduled for the 14th of May in Sierra Leone.
Apart from the notoriety of his AFRC junta, Koroma actually caught the attention of the public in May 2000 when, in the face of an advance on the capital by RUF rebels, he mobilised the country’s disparate fighting forces to stop the RUF from seizing power.
But Koroma told me in an interview that the statements were made in good faith, and that he wants a united army that will protect the territory of Sierra Leone.

 Johnny Paul Koromah
The AFRC coup was accompanied by an explosion of violence against civilians throughout the nation; the key strategic change was that the RUF had immediate access throughout the country, something they had failed to achieve through six years of military action.
To justify the AFRC coup, Koroma cited corruption, the erosion of State sovereignty, over-dependance on foreign nations, and the failure of the Government of Sierra Leone to adequately address tensions between the SLA and government supported tribally-based militia movements, in particular the Kamajors.
By 2000, Koroma was no longer held significant influence over the RUF leadership, as evidenced by the invovlement of ex-AFRC members (from a splinter group called the West Side Boys)in defending towns in Port Loko District against a renewed RUF offensive in May 2000.
