Johnny Weissmuller (June 2, 1904 – January 20, 1984) was a Danube Swabian swimmer and actor born in Austria-Hungary (in a town of the part of the Banat that is now in Romania), who came with his parents to the United States.
Johnny's father owned a bar for a time and his mother became head cook at a famed restaurant.His father worked as a brewer for the United States brewery in Chicago.
His parents were later divorced, as is shown by the divorce document filed in Chicago by Elizabeth Weissmuller, although a lot of sources state incorrectly that Weismuller's father died of tuberculosis contracted from working in coal mines and left her a widow.

Reginald Sheffield was married in 1927 to Louise Van Loon (January 21, 1905-April 14, 1987), a New York born Vassar College graduate with a liberal arts education who loved books and lectured widely.
And after his son, Johnny Sheffield, appeared in his last jungle movie in 1955, Reginald created, produced and directed a pilot for a TV series, Bantu, the Zebra Boy.

When 'Maureen O'Sullivan' wanted out of her Jane role in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan series, it was decided that she and Tarzan would adopt a son (they had to adopt, according to the Legion of Decency, because they weren't married) before she died.
Weissmuller personally chose Sheffield for the part of Boy, a part inspired by Bobby Nelson's portrayal in Tarzan the Mighty (1928); athletic by nature, he was taught to swim by swimming olympian Weissmuller.

By the time this installment was released in 1939 (it was the fourth in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan films) technology had developed considerly from the first film (Tarzan the Ape Man) in the early 30's which today seems abit primitive.
The stories main feature is of course the introduction of Johnny Sheffield as Boy, a character that remained in the rest of the Tarzan features.
