After a hiatus from recording, Johnny and his band of long-time drummer Torn Compton and bassist Mark Epstein took the stage at his home base, New York City's Bottom Line, in April 1997, and recorded the hard-hitting, "Johnny Winter Live In New York City '97" for Pointblank Records.
Johnny spent the rest of the '90s touring the United States and abroad.

Winter, 88, the father of fair-haired and fair-skinned classic rock legends Johnny and Edgar Winter, is sitting in his corner room of the fifth floor of the Hotel Beaumont, with a view that overlooks George Jones Place and the historic Jefferson Theater.
Both Johnny and Edgar have decided not to have any children of their own because of the possibility that they may be born albino, Winter said, adding that he and his wife don't regret not having any grandchildren.

Johnny Winter (born John Dawson Winter III on 23 February 1944 in Beaumont, Texas) is an American blues guitarist and singer, well known for his albinism, as well as his musical skills.
Johnny's reputation was well cemented at this point that he can be heard performing with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison on the infamous Hendrix bootleg recording "Woke Up This Morning and Found Myself Dead" done at New York City's Scene Club.
There are quite a few Johnny Winter albums that are considered "non-official." A majority of these albums were produced by the late Roy Ames, owner of Home Cooking Records/ Clarity Music Publishing.

I will never forget the sight of Winter thrashing about the stage his fingers a blur of white lightening: His pale skin and white hair were so exaggerated because he was otherwise totally dressed in fl (plus, I had been "testing" an interesting button from a cactus!) What a show that was.
Johnny Winter is quite simply excellent on guitar and vocals, John Turner and Tommy Shannon Round out his trio solidly and guest appearances from Water Horton, Willie Dixon and John's brother Edgar make the music excellent.

This performance was probably done during the initial months of Johnny's bout with heroin addiction and he is totally fearless during the concert although at times sounds very nervy.
Today I just wish Johnny was in his mid-twenties again, (albeit without the substance abuse) as he was here on this masterpiece.He would surely drive every other blues/rock axeman into the ground.
Johnny is sort of in the same genre as Rory Gallagher in that although they have some fantastic blues tracks, their music is generally mostly blues-based rock, and not pure blues like B.B. or Muddy.

Partly because he's such a hot dog, it's always been a little laughable to think of Johnny Winter as a bluesman, even when he's doing his best to approximate a purist, as he's done most of the last two decades since the mass audience deserted him.
Music seldom sounds more like a force of nature than when the Beaumont native is burning through a guitar solo with giddy abandon or singing a double entendre like a bug-eyed schoolboy who's just realized what the lyric actually means.
Coming off hip surgery, Winter doesn't do as much of the former as usual here, this being his first album since 1998 and first set of new material since 1993.
