  Johnson's Island, Ohio - History
Johnson’s Island was originally named Bull’s Island and was part of a tract of land owned by Epaproditus Bull.
From 1866 to 1894, the island was used primarily for agricultural purposes.
The causeway and island roads were not completed until the Johnson’s Island Property Owners Association, at its own expense, stoned and paved the roads in the 1970s.

The Johnson's Island Civil War Prison (official NHL name) was designated in June, 1990 as a National Historic Landmark, denoting the entire island as a landmark.
The Friends and Descendants of Johnson's Island (FDJI) are committed to secure as much of the prison compound and fortifications (currently approximately 17.1 acres) either through direct acquisition or by preservation easements.
Johnson's Island is not eligible to receive financial help from the CWPT or the ABPP as it isn't a Civil War battlefield.

Ray was captured at Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862 and came to the island on April 9th with the first group of Confederate soldiers.
Leonard B. Johnson furnished teams of horses to haul the markers from the Johnson’s Island dock to the cemetery.

However, sea otter were plentiful around the Channel Islands and Russian and American sea otter hunters were eager to obtain their pelts, which brought high prices in China.
As time passed, the lovely coves began to be dotted with tents in the summertime as the more adventurous mainlanders sailed across the channel to picnic on the shore and escape the heat of California's inland valleys.

East of the park on the Marblehead Peninsula is the Marblehead Lighthouse, one of the oldest on the Great Lakes.
Johnsons Island on the bay side of the peninsula was the site of a prison for Confederate soldiers captured during the Civil War.

Might be able to park at the church at the end of the lane and walk back.
You can see the roller coaster's at Cedar Point across the bay in one direction, Kellys Island in front of you and Perrys Monument to the other side across the Lake.
The glacial grooves on Kellys Island is pretty neat.

The earliest recorded history of James Cistern, found in the archives of the Methodist Church, states that the community was established by freed slaves who migrated from the plantations of Exuma (the Rolle Estates) and Cat Island (the Johnsons' and Bethels' Estates).
He is best known for shutting down the Parliament of the day because it would not pass legislation that would prohibit plantation owners from lashing or whipping their female slaves.
