The Johnson City Cardinals, an Appalachian Rookie League affiliate of St. Louis, play at Howard Johnson field, which was built in 1956 and had a major renovation in 1994.
This is a nice older field with a 60 degree slope at the edge of the right field warning track from the foul pole to center field.
The Cardinals were playing the Kingsport Mets and at the bottom of the 4th inning were leading 4 to 3.

Howard Johnson Stadium, with it's Seaver Pavilion (How Cardinal fans must cringe!) has been a Cardinal farm team for a very, very long time, and it is hard to avoid having a sense of this history.
The ballpark is right where downtown Johnson City used to be, before that moved out to State of Franklin Avenue, so traffic is never a problem.
It's always been there." One downside is the very aggressive campaign to protect spectators from the ball---every seat is behind screen, and the screen behind the plate is more like chain-link fence, all with lots of support mechanisms that further obstruct the view.

Former Yale baseball captain Tommy Kidwell '98 will return for his second season as manager of the Johnson City Cardinals and his fifth year as a minor league coach in the Cardinals organization in 2005.
He served as a coach in Johnson City from 2001 to 2003.
Kidwell was drafted by the Cardinals in the 33rd round of the June 1998 free-agent draft.

My previous interview was the Cardinals #1 pick in 2000, Shaun Boyd.  At the other end of the hype meter spectrum was Tyler Johnson.  Johnson was drafted by the Cardinals way out in the 34th round of that same 2000 draft from Moorpark Junior College in California. 
In the Arizona Fall League, Johnson showed well, with 15 strikeouts against only five walks in his 14-1/3 innings.
Johnson granted me an interview earlier this month.
