It is the wealthiest county in Kansas by a considerable margin, and the free-market rapture of the New Economy nineties served it well, scandals notwithstanding.
Johnson County is also said to be one of the most intensely Republican places in the nation (although it had a lower percentage of votes for George W. Bush than the state as a whole in the 2004 election).
Johnson County is named for Rev. Thomas Johnson, and was one of the first counties established in the Kansas Territory in 1855.

Organized in 1855. ; County seat Olathe. ; Named for Rev. Thomas Johnson, who in 1829 established a mission among the Shawnee Indians about eight miles southwest of Kansas City.  Mr.
Johnson took the Pro-Slavery side of politics, and was the President of the first Territorial Council.  He was shot and killed, in January 1865.

SUMMARY: The FHWA is issuing this notice to advise the public that a Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a proposed highway project located in Johnson County, Kansas, Cass County, Missouri, and Jackson County, Missouri is cancelled.
In 1995, the Johnson County Commission voted to withdraw its support and sponsorship of the 21st Century Corridor MIS/EIS, after which the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department (now the Missouri Department of Transportation) also withdrew its support and sponsorship.
Comments and questions concerning this proposed action and the EIS should be directed to the FHWA, Johnson County, or the Kansas Department of Transportation at the addresses provided.
