Johnson County is a county located in the north central of the U.S. state of Wyoming.
It was the scene in April, 1892 of the Johnson County War, also known as the War on Powder River, a rangewar between large cattle outfits and small stockgrowers (allegedly rustlers).
In the county the population was spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 28.70% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who were 65 years of age or older.

Wyoming cattle operations were much more flexible than a feudal system ought to have been.
Their Wyoming Stock Growers Association had employed range detectives since the mid 1870's to help curb cattle rustling -- these detectives were increasingly implicated in the deaths of assorted small ranchers and suspected cattle thieves.
Court proceedings dragged on, material witnesses disappeared, and when Johnson County was unable to afford room and board for so many prisoners, the entire case was dismissed.

The Johnson County War, also known as the War on Powder River or Wyoming Civil War, was a range war which took place in Johnson County, Wyoming, in the Powder River Country, in April 1892.
In the early days in Wyoming, most of the land was in the public domain, open both to stockraising as open range and to homesteading.
The Johnson County War, with its overtones of class warfare, and intervention of the President of the United States to save the lives of a gang of hired killers and set them free, does not fit in well with the American myth of the west.

To preclude the two from being seized by Wyoming authorities, the two were immediately taken into custody by an assistant United States marshal and taken to Omaha on an alleged charge of selling liquor to Indians.

Sheldon noted that no accounting of the money and no record of the writ has ever been found.

The festival was held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Buffalo, Wyoming on July 7th, 8th and 9th, 2006.
We added the first ever Wyoming Mandolin and Banjo championships and hosted Guitar and Fiddle contests too.
