Johnston Island, 825 miles southwest of Hawaii, was the only site where soldiers were entirely responsible for the storage, security and transport of the deadly chemical agents.
Johnston Island and Sand Island are natural islands, which have been expanded by coral dredging; North Island (Akau) and East Island (Hikina) are manmade islands formed from coral dredging.
Johnston Atoll has also been used by the military since the mid-1930s, serving as a refueling point for aircraft and submarines during World War II and as a base for airlift operations during the Korean War.

A mile and a half to the northeast of the main island is a small pile of sand and coral reef known as Sand or Agnes Island, about 200 yards in diameter and 8 feet high.
Both islands are enclosed by a semicircular reef, 7.1/2 miles across, nearly continuous on the north, but open to the south.
In 1941 Johnston Atoll was shelled by the Japanese after the Pearl Harbour attack and in 1948 it was placed under the control of the United States Air Force.

While I was stationed on Johnston Island in 1953 and 1954, I spent a lot of time in the HamShack.
I had asked for permission to visit the island in the spring of 2003, but was told the building that housed the Amateur Radio station was scheduled for demolition in January.
The majority of the population, which is between 800 and 900, are civilians who work for the contract companies that are preparing the island for its eventual turnover to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service during the later part of 2003.

I was at Sand Island, JA, from very late November or early December, 1962 to November 19, 1963, as ET3 and ET2, took over some of Jay Goff's communications duties when we lost both him and his RM2 billet.
I was stationed on Johnston as an ET3 from July 1978 to July 1979.
I went to the island in Dec 1966 as a new EN2 and left in Dec 1967 as a new EN1.
