 Limerick Leader - May 1st, 2004 - Sport - Gerry recalls day when sheep outnumbered spectators
Gerry remembers playing Kilkenny in Johnstown when there was only five spectators and 300 sheep watching their efforts.
With Croom, Gerry was a member of the 1976 county senior football championship team and won several south championships in both hurling and football and with Monaleen he annexed the county cup and all county league medals.
Gerry made his inter-county debut against Clare in atrocious conditions in Miltown Malbay.

FRESHFORD (Achadh-Ur), is located approximately 14 km north west of Kilkenny City along the R 693 regional route, which links Kilkenny with Urlingford, Johnstown, and Thurles in the north west of the County.
The parish of Freshford consists of the civil parishs of Freshford, Clashacrow and Garranamanagh and part of the parishes of Odagh and Ballylarkin.

The M11-N11/N30 (Dublin-Rosslare Road) serves New Ross on the eastern border of the county, while the N7/N8 (Dublin Cork Road) passes through Johnstown and Urlingford in the west of the county.
Kilkenny is served by the National routes to Dublin N9/N7, to Cork N77/N8 and Waterford N25.The distance from Dublin is approx 123Km(75 miles), from Cork 150 Km (92 miles) and from Waterford 50 Km (30 miles).
The direct route from Cashel is via N8 (Dublin Cork Road) to Urlingford and by the R993 to Kilkenny.

 GENUKI: County Kilkenny - Parish of Freshford
"Freshford", or Aghoura, a post-town and parish, in the barony of Cranagh, county of Kilkenny, and province of Leinster, 6 1/2 miles (W. W.) from Kilkenny, and 63 (S.W.) from Dublin, on the road from Kilkenny to Johnstown; containing 2277 inhabitants.
The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Ossory, episcopally united bto the parishes of Clomanto, Kilrush, Clashacrow, Rathbeagh, Tubridbritain, Sheefin, Clontubrid, and Coolcashin, which together form the uion of Freshford and the corps of the prebend of Aghoure (anciently called the Golden Prebend") in the cathedral of Kilkenny.
In the R. divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, comprising Freshford, Tullaroan, Ballynamara, Clashacrow, Ballylarkin, and parts of Odogh, Burnchurch and Clomanto, in which district is a chapel at Freshford, one at Odogh, and one at Tullaroan.

 Review of Halfway Home by Ronan Tynan
In spite of Ronan’s disability he had an active, eventful childhood growing up in the small village of Johnstown in the north of County Kilkenny which is 75 miles from Dublin.
Tynan was born in 1960 with a lower limb disability which caused him severe pain throughout his childhood in Ireland.
Tynan’s high opinion of himself was prevalent throughout the book.
