WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Tuesday embraced plans to add 14 acres to the Johnstown Flood National Memorial to save buildings from a former tony club that precipitated the 1889 disaster.
But the poorly built dam broke in 1889 after heavy rains, unleashing 20 million tons of water into Johnstown and killing 2,209 people in what was called the worst inland flood of the nation's history.
The $805,000 deal would let the National Park Service buy four buildings linked to the now-defunct South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club in the village of Saint Michael, three miles from the park's boundaries.
