Of paramount importance to East Pakistanis was the Bangla (before 1971 usually referred to as Bengali) language and culture, a consideration not appreciated by the West Wing of Pakistan until it was too late.
Their language, Bangla (then commonly known as Bengali), shares with Urdu a common Sanskritic-Persian ancestor, but the two languages have different scripts and literary traditions.
The enforced use of the Bangla language as a replacement for English at all levels of government and education was yet another policy that increased Bangladesh's isolation from the dynamics of the world economy.

Joi is a collision of styles, sounds and cultures, formed around the nucleus of brothers Farook and Haroon Shamsher and featuring a range of producers and instrumentalists, such as John Coxon (of Spring Heel Jack - remixers of Joi's Volume contribution).
Joi was formed in the mid-'80's as part of the Joi Bangla Movement, which was "A youth movement that set out to promote Asian culture of all forms, doing community work and that sort of thing," according to Farook.
The latter is perhaps the most bizarre incarnation of Joi, not least, because their music accompanies a game founded on the most Victorian of English traditions.

For Shamsher the music that Joi creates is not trendist or contrived, but rather a completely natural consequence of their eclectic upbringing.
In many ways Joi's long-term association with Womad is just as natural as the music they create; traditionally Bengali music is characterised as tribal travelling music.
While the Joi Sound System features live mixing, online sampling, live percussion and MC-ing, the Joi we will experience at Womad 2000 will be a full-on live performance featuring a vocalist, former Stone Roses guitarist Aziz Ebrahim, a Bengali classical dancer and a Moroccan percussionist.
