Joi Ito could make you feel better about the digitized global time, space, psychology and politics that we're all, willy nilly, entering.
Joi Ito was a disk jockey in Chicago before he rerooted himself in Tokyo.
Our introductory gab over coffee in his hotel room today is here in two 15-minute pieces: Part One is Joi Ito's account of this blogging tipping-point, a technological and social convergence at a moment when institutional media have become part of the world's problem.

 1 Emergent Democracy
Joichi Ito is an intensively hip fringeophiliac investor based in Tokyo and cybrerspace; he is also the nexus of a loose community of social software entrepreneurs and hackers along with tech-focused academics, writers and miscellaneous travelers who hang out online in Joi’s chat room, and who converse asynchronously via weblog posts and comments.
Joi is international (he was raised and schooled in both the U.S. and Japan), and he spends much of his life online establishing casual friendships with other cyberspace denizens who are spread around Japan, the U.S., and other countries.
When Joi thinks of democracy, he is thinking of both the U.S. and Japan, since he has roots in both places.

Joi Ito gave a fun talk at SDForum about being a massively multiplayer online game player, rather than a venture capitalist, and how the player’s experience could lead the development of virtual worlds.
Ito showed a video of his guild raiding in WoW, and then showed the Second Life site where his guild gathers to watch such videos when WoW is down for maintenance.
Ito also talked about the difference between “monochronic” time — in which only one thing is going on at once — and “polychronic” time — in which many connections with many people are available at any one time.

Ito: Creative Commons is focused mostly on trying to build a set of licenses with legal and technical robustness that will allow people to choose to make certain rights available to others.

 RConversation: Joi Ito's blog-block
Joi Ito is worried he's lost his blogging edge, or is becoming boring, that he receives a lot of criticism about his blog, and that he wrestles with blog-block.
Joi may or may not know this, but he was the initial catalyst that led to a chain reaction of events and encounters with people, which ultimately resulted in my decision to leave CNN for the blogosphere.
Joi Ito fears he's he's boring, and as a consequence he's developing "blogger's block." Rebecca MacKinnon riffs on Joi's concern.

Boing Boing: Joi Ito on WoW's project management lessons
Joi Ito's talk at the 23rd Chaos Communications Congress in Berlin last week aimed to explain his obsession with World of Warcraft and MMOs in general.
I saw Joi give a version of this talk once before -- he's basically working on the idea that these tools are an amazing way to learn leadership, teamwork, project management, planning and so forth (and he notes that blue-collar construction workers are generally better leaders than MBAs).
It's a mind-blowing little riff, especially as he breaks down the way that the UI tweaks and the constitution of each guild are predictors of its long-term success (and how that can apply to the management of open source projects).
