Amazon.com: Why People Die by Suicide: Books: Thomas Joiner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Joiner offers a dizzying array of studies to shore up his argument, and some of the evidence he offers is quite novel for the lay reader.
Joiner searches for the "why" of suicide as both a scientist and a survivor himself, and his research and insights help us to make sense of the pain and confusion that led our loved ones to end their lives.
Joiner asserts, essentially, that there are three ingredients that lead to suicide: lack of "belongingness"; inefficiency; and the ability to withstand pain in order to overcome the instinct for survival.

General Electric Company v. Joiner 522 U.S. 136 (1997)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Joiner had been a smoker for approximately eight years, his parents had both been smokers, and there was a history of lung cancer in his family.
Joiner's theory of liability was that his exposure to PCBs and their derivatives "promoted" his development of small cell lung cancer.
Of course, if the evidence raised a genuine issue of fact on the question of Joiner's exposure to furans and dioxins--as the Court of Appeals held that it did--then this basis for the ruling on admissibility was erroneous, but not because the district judge either abused her discretion or misapplied the law.

Joiner responded with the depositions of expert witnesses, who testified that PCBs, furans, and dioxins can promote cancer, and opined that Joiner’ exposure to those chemicals was likely responsible for his cancer.

 Joiner
Joiner, 522 U.S. 136 (1997), is usually cited for its holding that Daubert rulings are to be reviewed on appeal under a comparatively lenient "abuse of discretion" standard.
The Joiner Court rejected the argument that judicial review of exclusionary Daubert rulings should be stricter than usual because such rulings are often especially damaging to the propounding party.
The best way to interpret Joiner's "abuse of discretion" standard may be to see the Court as having been primarily concerned to rule out the only clear viable alternative: de novo review.

Joiner’s current research into the serotonin transporter gene indicates that it “seems to render a person vulnerable to future suicidal behavior.” From the moment of conception “this gene predisposes people to impulsivity (acting recklessly and out of control) and a proclivity to negative emotions (depression, anxiety).”
Joiner, his PhD students, and other collaborators have taken the data from their research and formed a theory about why people commit suicide—“they are experiencing the emotional pain of depression or anxiety and also have lost the fear and pain of self-injury.”
One is a perception of being a burden to others, having let everyone down, and the other is a feeling of not belonging, not feeling connected to a family or a relationship.

It was not revealed whether the Joiners were unjoined from the Killiks after the Colony was put into disarray after the death of Lomi Plo and UnuThul's capture by the Galactic Alliance.
