Jean de Joinville - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As Joinville had been a close friend of the king, his counselor and his confidant, his testimony was invaluable to the inquest, where he appeared as a witness in 1282.
Joinville dedicated it in 1309 to her son, Louis, king of Navarre and count of Champagne, the future Louis X of France.
Joinville leaves the person of the king, the subject of his book, and explains clearly that the successors of the king would be well to follow Louis' example, but he goes no further; he is not writing a work of morality.

Joinville: Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Joinville was with the king throughout his first crusade - his immediate lord had not gone, otherwise we would assume that he would have served with him and so not come into direct contact with Louis to the extent that he did.
What Joinville seems to have done was, probably around 1270, to write his memoirs of the crusade, and his Life of St Louis would appear to consist largely of a reworking of this material with suitable hagiographical details added at both the beginning and the end.
Measuring Joinville's account against modern historians' accounts of what we think really happened so as to test his credibility is one thing, but in a sense it does not matter too much whether the stories Joinville told actually happened in quite the way he described.
