Johannesburg - Jomo Sono on Monday declared he was not available for the post - then added further fuel to the fires of controversy surrounding the Bafana Bafana assistant coach job by declaring Gordon Igesund was the logical choice for the position.
Sono and Igesund were the only two South Africans on a final short-list of seven who were placed under the microscope by Safa as candidates to take over as Bafana head coach - a far-reaching position before the 2010 World Cup that has now been offered to former Brazil World Cup coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
Sono said he did not mean to detract from the ability of Pitso Mosimane, Khabo Zondo and Steve Komphela, who have been named by the Safa technical committee as candidates to become Bafana's assistant coach and also as the interim coach until the new appointee arrives.

Jomo Sono as he is affectionately known was born in Orlando East in Soweto, Johannesburg on 17 July 1955.
Sono was given the nickame “ Jomo” meaning a burning spear, by Rocks Mthembu, a pirate fan, who saw in him the same leadership qualities as those of Jomo Kenyatta, president of Kenya.
Sono is credited with sporting talent from rural areas and most of his recruits formed the nucleus of the South African National Squad (Bafana Bafana) that won the African Cup of Nations in 1996.

Matsilela Ephraim Sono (affectionately known as Jomo Sono and sometimes also called the "Black Prince of South African Soccer" and "Bra J") (17 July 1955 -) is a South African soccer club owner and coach and was also a star soccer player.
Sono was born in the township of Orlando East in Soweto, near Johannesburg.
However, the head coach of the team at that time, Carlos Queiróz, felt that his position was being undermined by this appointment and resigned.
