Higgins had been in declining health for the last couple of months with congestive heart failure, according to her son Horace.
Higgins was raised first on a farm in Maine and then on farms in Ohio, Michigan, and finally Idaho, where she graduated from high school.
She married John Higgins, who worked for a logging company, in 1918, and for the next ten years the family moved wherever the work was.

This year’s Navaratri is dedicated to the late Jon B. Higgins, who was a student of Karnatak music under Professor Viswanathan.
Higgins received his Bachelors of Arts as a double major in Music and History at the University in 1962.
According to Srinivasan, Higgins was recognized as the first non-Indian to perform South Indian classical Karnatak music at a high level of proficiency.

The opening event in the weekend-long Navaratri Festival, the performance benefited the Jon B. Higgins Memorial Fund, which supports the University's South Indian music and dance departments.
Thirteen pieces in all were performed, ranging from late 18th century songs to the opener, which was written in the 1920s.
Higgins was a musician who both attended and taught at the University.
