Jon Bentley interviewed by Josephine Ochej
Saxophonist Jon Bentley’s been on the Vancouver jazz scene since his days in Capilano College’s Jazz Program in the mid-90s, as both a first-call player and leader of his own groups like Diversions (formed in 1998) and the more recent Jon Bentley Quintet.
Bentley talks about his two years spent studying in London, England, his thoughts on the state of the Vancouver jazz scene and recording the JBQ’s new release, the reflective and reverential “Motions”.
The Jon Bentley Quintet is: Jon Bentley, saxophones; Bernie Arai, drums; Chris Gestrin, piano; André Lachance, bass; Brad Turner, trumpet.

Amazon.de: Programming Pearls: English Books: Jon Louis Bentley   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In his book Bentley assumes little more than a working knowledge of C, but it's in no way a guide to C. Rather, it approaches programming in the same way William Morris approached design--as a creative act founded on knowledge of the craft.
What Bentley does in each of these columns is take some part of the field of programming--something that every one of us will have run into at some point in our work--and dig underneath it to reveal the part of the problem that is permanent; that doesn't change from language to language.
Bentley presents a particular problem (the details don't matter) and multiple different ways to solve it, calculating the relationship between problem size and run time for each algorithm.

Bentley's Rules from Writing Efficient Programs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Caching rule can be seen as an extension of this rule, in which "the commonest case" is "whatever case was most recently requested." Bentley cites a Julian-date conversion function in which it was observed that 90% of all calls presented the same date as the previous call.
Bentley recommends writing a separate program that reads the input data and processes it into an intermediate form that can be read and stored more quickly.
Bentley cites Knuth as reporting that both sine and cosine of an angle can be computed as a pair for about 1.5 times the cost of computing one of them alone.

XPlorations - Refactorings from 'Writing Efficient Programs'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Jon Bentley wasn't using the term "refactoring" in his books like Writing Efficient Programming, but many of his optimization guidelines can be looked at that way.
Bentley points out a related issue though: some designs will read and write complete files in a multi-pass way, but an implementation could be designed to have the various passes communicate via in-memory buffers, a little at a time, rather than through the file system.
Bentley has a series of rules that discuss how to spend space to save time, and vice versa.

Bentley says the envelope can be used to compare two approaches to a problem or to see if a particular solution is feasible at all.
There are two main keys in performing a back of the envelope calculation: \begin{enumerate} \item Employ a safety factor to compensate for what you don't know.
Little's Law states that ``The average number of things in the system is the product of the average time each on spends in the system.'' (And if there is a gross ``flow balance'' of things entering and leaving, the exit rate is also the entry rate.)

Bentley's easy-to-read style makes this book a pleasure to read.
His theoretical analysis is impeccable, but he presents complex topics in a chatty format that makes you remember the joy you felt the first time you wrote a program, and lets you know he still feels that way.
