Jon Hassell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jon Hassell (born March 22, 1937, Memphis, Tennessee) is an American musician and trumpet player.
Hassell learned to apply a unique style of trumpet playing by mimicing Nath's vocal stylings, and later connected with Brian Eno and began using harmonizer effects on his recordings.
Hassell is also known as the creator of "Fourth World" music, which is a combination of ancient music and "futuristic" technological treatments.

Metisse Music <Music Publishing in Paris, France> - Jon Hassell
Hassell integrated his Kirana style trumpet with electronic effects and with subtly shifting synthesizer drones similar to those of Solid State, adding the sounds of ocean and birds and simple, evocative rhythm tracks.
Jon Hassell tours with his own ensemble, and he often works with musicians from other musical cultures, such as his 1987 collaboration in concert (for "Serious Fun" at Lincoln Center) with Farafina, the eight member group of percussionists, singers and dancers from Burkina Faso in Africa.
Hassell has intended the album as a tribute to the "musical exotica" he heard as a child "on the radio or in movie scores," and his statement unlocks many doors to his music.

Jon Hassell interview- Perfect Sound Forever
Jon Hassell has made huge impressions on the music we hear today and what we'll be hearing tomorrow also.
This has been laid out by Hassell over the course of his career through not only his own recordings but the contributions he's made to other performers who latched onto his ideas like Brian Eno, Talking Heads and David Toop.
I won't argue with anyone who also says that his work became a big inspiration for trance and trip-hop- as a matter of fact, Hassell was more than receptive to the new dance music that was being produced, incorporating it into his Dressing For Pleasure CD as an extension of his own ideas.

Trumpeter Jon Hassell has for years occupied a unique place in the new music scene: not jazz, not contemporary classical, not rock, yet somehow stepping on the cracks in the luckiest way imaginable.
Hassell's album Maarifa Street: Magic Realism 2 (Label Bleu, £13.99) is made from live concerts in Montreal, Paris and Milan, with sidemen John Beasley (keys), Peter Freeman (bass) and Rick Cox (guitar), and guests Dhafer Youssef (voice and oud) and Paolo Fresu, who appears on the Milan version of Open Secret.
This duet for the two trumpeters, which Hassell calls "whispering in the dark", is the only track that hasn't been re-worked and overdubbed.

Jon Hassell has released a new album entitled "Maarifa Street" on Label Bleu, in the style of music he describes as Fourth World, an hybrid of music both ancient and digital, composed and improvised, Eastern and Western.
On this new album, beginning with three live concerts, some performances (notably, trumpet) were kept intact, other layers were either re-performed or invented anew while some layers migrated from one performance to another.
Jon Hassell has said about the title: “A clipping from the New York Times 17 April 2003 which mentions a "Maarifa Street" in Qualat Sukkar, Iraq.

After subsequent collaborations with minimalist pioneers La Monte Young and Terry Riley, Hassell mounted a number of solo pieces known collectively as the Landmusic Series; the most famous of these so-called "sound monuments" was 1969's Solid State, an electronic project which evoked the gradual erosion of sand dune formations via a tuned mass of vibrations.
Beginning in 1972, Hassell studied classical Indian music under the tutelage of Pandit Pran Nath, modifying Nath's vocal techniques to the trumpet to develop the Fourth World concept, which he introduced with 1978's Vernal Equinox.

Although this album was never a chart hit and has become surprisingly underappreciated over the years, its influence on what has since become known as tribal techno is incalculable, as has its influence on those art rockers who have picked up a world music vibe.

The music is jazzier and more energetic than his later projects, probably influenced by Miles's On the Corner and Weather Report and other world music practitioners of the time, but the moods evoked here are not hot, with melody lines and interplaying leads, rather the ryhthms and textures are more important.
