Savatage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Savatage is a heavy metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1979.
Savatage continued to focus on their Trans-Siberian Orchestra project for a while, releasing The Christmas Attic, but the release of Poets and Madmen in 2001 was highlighted by Jon Oliva's return as lead vocalist.
Although the album is technically a Jon Oliva solo album, with Jon handling all instrumental duties except for vocals and lead guitars, the album was released under the Savatage name with bass and drum credits given to Middleton and Wacholz, respectively.

While some may tend to forget the softer side of Jon Oliva’s voice, Caffery assures us that Oliva has done an amazing job as both “the Poet” and “the Madman” on what producer Paul O’Neill has unexpectedly weaved into yet another concept album.
Since he has spent the last two months putting the TSO tours together with Paul O’Neill and Bob Kinkel in an effort to cast thirty musicians, he says that the Savatage line-up has been the least of their worries.

FoundryMusic BANDS Review: SAVATAGE - POETS and MADMEN
For the past 20 years, Savatage has undergone countless lineup changes, the tragic loss of guitarist Chris Oliva, brother to current frontman Jon Oliva, and a flurry of lukewarm album sales.
This album marks the return to the microphone of bandleader Jon Oliva, who drove Savatage to great power-metal heights during the 1980s, and he brings his honesty back to the ever-changing lineup.
Savatage are really brlliant musicians and composers, but that brilliance may be packaged improperly (ie; your target audience may not want to think their way through the disc to appreciate it).

RevelationZ Magazine - Album Review - Savatage - Edge Of Thorns
Edge of thorns has had a hard time with me since I was shocked when I found out that Jon Oliva wasn't singing anymore.
I have always preferred the way Jon Oliva perfectly fits the music and feeling of Savatage and after Streets it was hard to see him leave the seat for someone who, to my ears, didn't have the same ability to create the "Savatage feeling" of earlier albums.
Edge Of Thorns is one of those albums where the degree of variation and sanity is extremely high, and yet there runs a thin tread through the record that binds things together like some sort of magic glue, resulting in something that could be described as a complete experience.

This track has something to satisfy every Savatage fan as it weaves from Oliva's melancholy piano and vocal to balls-out rifforama with their latter day trademark million-man singalong sandwiched between.
For years, Savatage lyrics have had an uncommon duality in that they are usually part of an elaborate story, yet remain poignant and self-inclusive when detached from the whole.

When 'Edge of Thorns' was released, it represented Savatage's greatest commercial success up to that point, and Jon Oliva had many mixed emotions.
It has been erroneously reported (including on one section of Savatage's own web site!) that Jon stepped aside due to vocal problems, but in fact he felt that he'd reached his musical peak with Savatage on the 'Streets' album and wished to pursue other interests.
Shortly after the release of 'Edge of Thorns', the most significant event in band history occurred on a rainy morning in Florida.

Already four albums into a career that was, at last, starting to pay dividends for the band, "Hall Of The Mountain King" was to prove a milestone in the band's history.
