Sable became a drunk before falling in with a band of mercenaries who gave him a better than even opportunity of getting himself killed and that's really what was driving him and, to a certain extent, still does.
Sable is a man with a death wish, struggling to put his life back together with the aid of his friends.
Sable is affected by the world we live in because it's the world he lives in, a world of conflict and terrorism.

Sable represented a reversal of the usual superhero situation, in which the mystery-shrouded adventurer was his real identity and the open, public persona was the disguise.
Sable was homeless for the rest of the 1990s (tho he did make a major guest appearance in Grell's Shaman's Tears in 1995).
Sable, written by Grell, was published as a novel during July of that year.

SB: Jon Sable seemed to be the quintessential hero of the ‘80s: Part Dirty Harry, part Equalizer, part James Bond, Sable overcame his own personal tragedies to fight the good fight (for a price) in a grim-and-gritty world.
And since I crafted Sable to be outside of the super-hero realm, it was interesting to play with a storyline that he would have to confront this.

The answer to that comes in the image of Sable's murdered family, the inciting incident that has governed his life from that day onward, turning him into a man driven (unknown to him, but apparent to everyone close to him) by a deathwish.
This wasn't a story about Sable being pursued by killers, it was about Sable being pursued by his past.

Mike Grell's JON SABLE was a freelance mercenary/gun-for-hire who lived in New York City.
And Sable gained enough of a cult following that, in the summer of 2000, Grell wrote and published his first Sable novel, the eponymously-titled Sable, that re-tells the story of those first five or six issues, and apparently drew considerable praise from fans and non-fans alike.
When the network saw it, they decided that he was a little heavy to be believable in the role, so the pilot was re-shot with Lewis Van Bergen playing Jon Sable...I remember everyone being so psyched to have Gene in the lead and how bummed they were when they had to re-shoot.

This show JTS when they "killed" the hero alter ego of childrens book author/freelance avenger Jon Sable on the 7th and last episode of the show.
Except for (of course) the one where some (other) nutter PRETENDS to be Sable except HE really shoots people with HIS gun (because he's not as nice as the REAL Sable) I'm spending more time on this than it deserves.
His only joy in life was telling the world's oldest, lamest jokes, mostly to poor Sable, 'cause I think he was the only one who ever visited him, and playing with a little box that played recorded laughter and applause when he turned it on after each dumb joke.
