As the title suggests, "Conversations with Jon Turteltaub" is about director Jon Turteltaub and related information, such as his approach to directing, making films, working with actors, all that sort of stuff.
We see brief clips of Jon directing and hear testimonials from those he has worked with – mainly actors – about how great he is (as though they would say they didn't like him, even if they didn't!).
Jon talks a lot, as you can guess from the title, and discusses his job.

Turteltaub directed his latest film, National Treasure, straight to number one, a position befitting the auteur behind The Kid, While You Were Sleeping, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas, perhaps the Citizen Kane of triplicate ninja films.
Hence, Jon Turteltaub is exactly the right kind of hack for this kind of harmless popcorn thriller.
What Turteltaub does so smoothly is inject absolutely none of his personality into a film like National Treasure, so as not to detract from the quirkiness of a Nicolas Cage or the penchant for the blank, blockbuster-ability of a Jerry Bruckheimer.

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- With world attention focused on the nuclear ambitions of rogue states like North Korea, one might assume that the producers of CBS' promising new drama "Jericho," which deals with the aftermath of a nuclear attack, are merely playing on Americans' fears.
Turteltaub's intention isn't to prey on that fear in the name of easy scares.
It's those choices -- many of which have arisen as a result of "societal conventions being stripped away" -- that intrigue Turteltaub, a feature film director who shot the Nicolas Cage hit "National Treasure" and next directs its sequel, as he gets deeper into his first foray into television.

Instead let's marvel at how a trio of hack writers (collectively responsible for "Snow Dogs," "The 6th Day" and "I-Spy"), coupled with a director whose best work is mediocre and pedestrian (Jon Turteltaub of "Phenomenon" and "Instinct"), can take this dumb idea and make it even worse in every conceivable way.
First they contrived to have a series of barely coherent clues to the treasure's location appear in laughably cryptic little poems and in the design of the $1 and $100 bills.
Turteltaub's next order of business was bad casting.

SPLICEDwire | "The Kid" review (2000)
Welles is a cagey and facile screenwriter who draws outside the lines on her characters and sprinkles the movie with moments of '30s-style screwball comedy and poignant sincerity, like the scene in which young Rusty proposes to Amy because he figures Russ doesn't have the courage to do it himself.
While Turteltaub is pretty shameless with the movie's saccharine level and sentimental lessons-learned finale, he's also most directly responsible for keeping "The Kid's" IQ quotient respectably high.
There are definitely remnants of old school Disney flicks here, but like the studio's update of its own "The Parent Trap" in 1998, this movie knows how to play sweet without insulting the intelligence of toady's more worldly family audiences -- thanks in large part to the Welles clever writing.

With Disney producing the movie, the humor could have been trite and childish, thereby diminishing the athletes and sport the film portrays.
Surprisingly, however, Jon Turteltaub resisted for the most part the natural Disney inclination to dumb down a story; instead he gives us a tale which, while perhaps cleaner and cheerier than it really lived, still conveys the drive and courage of Olympic athletes pushing hard to be the best.
Turteltaub has transferred Richard Lester's excellent screenplay from the Beatles' 1964 hit to the Jamaican bobsled team, creating of the mix an excellent group of characters who, even more than the absurdity of the story itself, drive the movie.

 national treasure
Restlessly directed by Jon Turteltaub, who showed no particular flair for adventure filmmaking in his wet Phenomenon and Instinct, the movie goes like a rocket, from one ornate clue to the next; National Treasure is more a detective story than a two-fisted adventure like the Indiana Jones movies.
The vast treasure promised by a family document has haunted Ben's life, much to the dismay of his hard-headed dad (Jon Voight), who thinks the treasure's a myth.
Regardless, Ben has managed to convince some people, including his computer-nerd helper Riley (a scene-stealing Justin Bartha) and a shady character, Ian Howe, who funds Ben's missions; Ian is played by Sean Bean, who specializes in duplicity, so we know he's bad news the second we lay eyes on him.

Nicolas Cage stars as Ben Gates, a member of a Freemason sect known as the Knights of the Templar who has spent his life searching for a legendary bounty hidden during the Revolutionary War by the founding fathers (most of whom were also Freemasons).
Amidst such thumb-twiddling tediousness, Jon Voigt pops up as Ben's cranky dad and Harvey Keitel cameos as an FBI agent (and Freemason sympathizer) hot on Ben's trail, neither actor putting any effort into their embarrassingly undemanding roles.
But I guess some small consolation can be derived from the fact that, at the preview I attended, Keitel's initial appearance was greeted with a burst of spontaneous laughter from the crowd—an encouraging sign that the once-daring actor's selling-out in this lazy, dunderheaded debacle hadn't gone completely unnoticed.
