Commentary on the Whole Bible Volume IV (Isaiah to Malachi) | Christian Classics Ethereal Library
What the rules of living were which Jonadab, probably by his last will and testament, in writing, and duly executed, charged his children, and his posterity after him throughout all generations, religiously to observe; and we have reason to think that they were such as he himself had all his days observed.
Jonadab might, without a spirit of prophecy, foresee the destruction of a people so wretchedly degenerated, and he would have his family provide, that, if they could not in the peace thereof, yet even in the midst of the troubles thereof, they might have peace.
Jonadab was long since dead, and was ignorant of them, and could neither take cognizance of their disobedience to his orders nor give correction for it; but God lives for ever, to see how his laws are observed, and is in a readiness to revenge all disobedience.

One week Jonadab would be so bloated with horse pride that he couldn't find room for his vittles, and the next he'd be out in the stable growlin' 'cause it cost so much for hay to stuff an old hide-rack that wa'n't fit to put in a museum.

2 Samuel 13 - Amnon, Tamar, and Absalom
Jonadab was a cousin to Amnon, being the son of David's brother (2 Samuel 13:32).
And Jonadab said to the king, "Look, the king's sons are coming; as your servant said, so it is." So it was, as soon as he had finished speaking, that the king's sons indeed came, and they lifted up their voice and wept.
Jonadab probably hoped to gain favor with David by bringing this more favorable news, but God knew that Jonadab set the whole course of events in motion with his wicked advice to Amnon (2 Samuel 13:3-5).

Therefore, Jonadab urges, the king should not mourn excessively, as though all of his sons are dead (verses 32-33).
Jonadab knew that Absalom was planning to kill Amnon, and he neither said nor did anything to prevent it.

Jonadab would surely have worried about the deterioration in his community because of Baal worship, and he sees that some day things may get so bad in Israel that they might have to pack up and leave.
So Jonadab decides on a mechanism to keep their eyes focused on the land of promise ahead and not on things of this world.
These sons of Jonadab must have seen what was happening, seen the increasing idolatry, heard the prophets, and packed up and moved to the southern kingdom of Judah.

 Example of the Rechabites
Rechab was the father of Jehonadab (here called Jonadab), who supported Jehu in his purge of the Baal prophets from Israel (2 Kings 10:15-28).
Jonadab had apparently given strict commands to his descendants regarding the lifestyle they were to live (verses 6-10).
Interestingly, the Rechabites saw that obedience to these commands from their forefather would allow them to "live many days in the land"—which was the blessing God promised for following the Fifth Commandment in obeying one's parents (see Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16).
