At Jonah Barrington's school, pupils were encouraged to play all sports - and he delighted in the lot; cricket, rugby, football, tennis, badminton, swimming and the squash that was to make him world-famous.
Opponent after opponent was worn down as Barrington exploited his ability to outlast them in long rallies, using his uncanny ability (to quote the admiring Geoff Hunt) 'to keep the ball along the sidewalls and at the back of the court with accurate lobs and drives'.
Barrington felt that he was almost ostracised, not only in squash committees round the world, but by many in the media.

 Days and Nights at Garavans
Lawyer, parliamentarian, and the engagingly chatty chronicler of his own life and times, Sir Jonah Barrington was called to the Bar in 1788 and entered the Irish Parliament as a member for Tuam in 1790, holding the seat until 1798.
Barrington's writings open a delightful window onto late 18th century Ireland; anecdotal, racy and often very funny, they give an authentic sense of the colourful and largely feckless life-style of the gentry.
Mrs Yeats had been reading aloud to her husband from Barrington's Personal Sketches, and his retelling of the incident is in the first section of the poem, 'Ancestral Houses'.

An Amendment was proposed to be made to the Question, by leaving out from the word "That" to the end of the Question, in order to add the words "Sir Jonah Barrington be called to the bar of this House, and asked the nature of the Evidence he is desirous to produce" instead thereof.
Resolved, That Sir Jonah Barrington has been guilty of serious malversation in the discharge of his office of Judge of the High Court of Admiralty, and that it is unfit and would be of bad example, that he should continue to hold the said office.

Barrington junior had a different view of the game: "I've only played on that glass court four times before - and it's so different from the conventional courts I'm used to.
Jonah Barrington agreed that Willstrop is now looking like a complete player — 'as if he was born on a glass court'.
