Jonah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Prophet Jonah, as depicted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel
Jonah (יוֹנָה "Dove", Standard Hebrew Yona, Latin Ionas, Tiberian Hebrew, and (Arabic يونس Yunus or Yunis in Islamic Qura'anic terms) was a person in the Biblical Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh, the son of Amittai ("True"), from the Galilean village of Gath-hepher, near Nazareth.
Jonah, from a notion probably that his divine mission would be disputed, was afflicted at this result and complained to God that he had always questioned whether, as being a God of mercy, He would not yield to their prayers.

 Jonah - David Steinberg
Jonah is very displeased and he sits in a sukkah under the blazing Iraqi sun to wait to see what will happen to the city.
Jonah did not want to follow God's order but was prevailed upon to do so after having seen that he could not avoid doing so because God is master of the entire universe.
For example, it is possible that Jonah (meaning "dove") represents Israel, the fish represents Babylon, the time in the fish the Babylonian exile and the expulsion of Jonah from the fish represents God's return of Israel to its own land in the late 6th century BCE.

Following Christ - Jonah, a Fish and a Vine
Jonah's disobedience in his initial call was one thing, perhaps understandable due to the magnitude and improbability of the task, but there is something very dark in his second failure: why do we sometimes prefer misfortune for others, divine judgment, rather than God's grace?
No, just as the text tells us that "God provided" a fish to save him from his disobedience (1:17), I do not think it is at all coincidental that here again we read the identical phrase that "God provided" a plant to comfort him and teach him a lesson.
For all its quirkiness Jonah bears a powerful, prophetic word for you and me today about divine grace offered to me even in my own disobedience, and a warning about how easy it is to desire that grace for yourself but to deny it to others.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--The central story of the book of Jonah is not that of a big fish, but of the grace and mercy of a loving God, Southern Baptist Convention President James Merritt said in a June 22 sermon at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Jonah tried to escape from preaching the gospel to the sinful people at Ninevah, but God used a large fish ultimately to bring him to the city.
While Jonah's disobedience resulted in him being swallowed by a fish, Merritt said the fish is not the central point of the book.
