Trivia: Jonas Geirnaert (then 21 years old) was a student animation and hadn't even graduated, when he came upon a registration form for the Cannes Festival on their site, decided he had nothing to lose and sent in his "graduation-work".
Normally you would say never, but it happened to Jonas Geirnaert, a young student animation who sent in his unfinished graduation-work and astonished the world with it.
I guess there are many different ways of interpreting it all, but in my opinion that's not even the most important part of the movie.

Jonas Geirnaert is a 2004 graduate of the KASK Hogeschool, Gent, and his traditionally-animated short Flatlife was his senior thesis as well as a Jury Prize winner at Cannes, an accolade that must have gone well with the school tassel.
It’s a brilliant work of non-sequitur grace, and it should come as no surprise that animator Geirnaert is also part of a four-man improv comedy cabaret called Neveneffecten (Side Effects).

The whole evening, it seemed, had been a setup for Moore's crowning moment.
When Jonas Geirnaert's "Flatlife" won a prize for best short film, the Belgian director issued from the stage a message urging "the American people not to vote for Bush." And moments later, British actor Tim Roth congratulated Geirnaert for his "brave" remarks.
As award after award went to everyone but Moore, a notable anticipation grew: It seemed that "Fahrenheit 9/11" was going to be completely ignored or given the top prize.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize last year at Cannes, Belgium's Jonas Geirnaert employs a much simpler animation technique in Flatlife, an off-beat look at the simultaneous goings-on in four different apartments which playfully celebrates the banalities and the absurdities of everyday living with equal vigour.
Using a screen divided into quadrants that are essentially self-contained, Geirnaert maintains interest by shifting the focus from one incident to another, as time after time the residents of each apartment are forced to interact in their pursuit of peaceful solitude.

Belgian director Jonas Geirnaert, a winner for his short film, used his first big break as a filmmaker to talk about Moore's movie and urge Americans not to vote for President Bush.
Moore's Cannes appearances have given him a much wider following internationally, including in Europe, where people love his anti-Bush message and are charmed by his folksy all-American image.
