Renkse's lyrics often deal with very dark subject matter often relating to isolation and a general incompatibilty with society and human conventions.

Katatonia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Katatonia is a Swedish Doom Metal band formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1991 by Jonas Renkse (formerly Lord Seth) and Anders Nyström (formerly Blackheim).
The early releases of the band feature mostly harsh vocals and can stylistically be considered as a mixture of doom and death metal.

Jonas Renkse, along with the rest of the band, have proclaimed their fondness for Tool in the past, and you can hear a blatant influence in the music, but especially in Jonas' voice and tone patterns, though the vocals are a little under-produced.
Jonas uses a vocal effect, and for a second reminds me of the singer from Garbage.
Jonas uses the same vocal effect mentioned in Premonition, and I kind of wish that he didn't use it, as he doesn't need to.

 Katatonia: Melancholic Atmospheric Metal/Rock
Jonas chooses a half-whispered, half-sung approach here that fails to be as convincing as it could have been.
It’s notable how far Jonas Renkse has advanced in his role as a live vocalist, and his stark presence and lost-in-icy-distance stare visually compliment the smooth melancholy of his voice.
Through depressive, achromatic melodies and Jonas Renske’s captivating voice of cold fragility and dismay, the expression of life’s melancholy this act have always commanded resonates brilliantly in "Leaders", "Soil’s Song", "July" and "In The White".

Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Once again Jonas Renkse takes the helm of the vocal duties with another progressive album from the Swedish fl metal kings.
Renkse's voice fits chillingly with the concept and captures the emotions in a way that pulls the listener in.
Apart from that, there are some nice vocals and the use of echoes on Renkse's voice late on, also some trademark memorable drums, perhaps I was a little hard on it, it's not a bad track after all.

Jonas explains: "It took some time to make and record this album, because we had some financial troubles which didn't allow us to be in the studio all of the time.
Renkse and his bandmate Fred Norrman have also produced something far less parent-friendly since Katatonia started to develop this new sound of theirs, a sound which is far from the raw emotions of _Dance of December Souls_ and the harshness of _Brave Murder Day_.
Jonas is not very keen on describing the kind of emotional qualities of his vocals, however.

Maybe this was due to the fact that Katatonia produced the album themselves over a vast period of time; maybe it was the persuasive use of light and dark, used to illustrate perfectly the emotional gravitas of the songs, either way this was the album that made the whole world sit up and listen.
Renkse really had come into his own as one of the most honest and distinctive vocalists around from this scene.
Renkse and Nystrm then returned home to the making of their seventh album and spent the whole spring completing the process.

They were playing on borrowed equipment, the sound was terrible, and Jonas Renkse was way off-key and very uncomfortable-looking as the frontman.
While the plodding feel of the originals is an integral part of their atmosphere on the albums, the increased energy level is welcome in a live environment.
Renkse barely moves and usually sings with his eyes closed and otherwise stares down at his feet or directly into the microphone.

The band was born during a temporary break-up of Katatonia, of whom all the members originate.
Renkse is a huge fan of a musical element hordes of the music “listening” public just doesn’t appreciate nor understand — and it’s this very element which saturates “Grey Dawn”.
If Renkse was going to do a “side project”, he’d have done something drastically different musically (such as Anders did with Diabolical Masquerade).

The EP was so successful that Renkse and Nyström knew they would need a more complete line-up.
After that, Katatonia more or less broke up; Renkse and Nyström were unable to assemble a line-up that was capable of producing what they wanted the band to sound like, so they turned their full attention to their other bands.
Everything from the visual side of the band to the soft, but disturbed vocals is so believable and honest, that one would think that these guys really have issues with life.

When Jonas Renkse announced that they were about to play their last song, he said it was going to be a song from _Brave Murder Day_.
Renkse more than emulated Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals on _Brave Murder Day_ to create an unforgettable experience, and the band even added some of _BMD_'s characteristic double-bass drumming to the end of the song to finish their set.

October Tide was a side project from Katatonia members Jonas Renkse and Fredrik Norrman.
For this release Jonas handled the Drums & vocals, and Fredrik played the bass & guitar, whilst the line-up also included two unknown musicians by the names of Morion whom handled the keyboards, and Christer Aberg playing the violin.
Although at this point in time Jonas wasn’t handling the vocals in Katatonia (Mikael Åkerfeldt was) here on ‘Rain Without End’ he growls and screams like he did on the first two Katatonia releases.

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance - Review - Stylus Magazine
On their full-length debut, Dance of December Souls, Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström offered a heavy doom/death metal hybrid, much in the vein of early Paradise Lost.
Renkse injured his voice through too much harsh growling, and the band enlisted Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt for vocals on 1996's Brave Murder Day.
Renkse returned to the microphone for Discouraged Ones, but with a new vocal style: clean, melodic singing.

While Jonas claims in interviews that October Tide is not aiming to recreate the old Katatonia sound, this album still leads me to the conclusion that October Tide is mainly a project for Jonas and Fredrik to relive the old Katatonia days.

Vocalist Jonas Renkse has one of those very sad, gloomy voices that to me defines this band, which is why I really don’t see Katatonia pre-Discouraged Ones as the same band.
Katatonia has never been a very lyrically intelligent band and it’s more of the way Renkse delivers the vocals that gets the message across rather than the actual lyrics themselves.

Probably the simplicity of songs construction, their compactness (verse-chorus), clean, sorrowful, almost weeping Jonas' vocal (by the way, some ideas with recording & mixing were brought by Mike Akerfeldt), imbued with despair lyrics, a kind of tranquil & indifferent guitar sound make the third album like this.
