Justinas Staugaitis, signatory of the Act of Independence, famous Lithuanian politician and cultural worker, was appointed the first bishop of Telsiai.
Bishop J. Staugaitis based upon the decision of Trident holy council (1545-1563), telling that each diocese should have priests' preparation establishments, preparing youth to pastoral work in his own diocese.
Bishop J. Staugaitis asked the deans and all the believers to help, but it was extremely difficult to collect such an amount.

 The Telsiai Diocese
Justinas Staugaitis was the first bishop assigned to the new diocese that included 104 parishes with about 347 200 Catholics.
When Klaipeda was annexed by Germany in 1939, the Klaipeda district was separated from the Telsiai diocese.When Lithuania regained the Klaipedan territory, it once again became a part of the diocese.
In 1940 Bishop V. Borisevicius was sent to aid Bishop Staugaitis until the latter's death in 1944.

The main reason for this reform was that Lithuanians had never been directly ruled by the Vatican.
As the Telsiai bishop Justinas Staugaitis wrote in his memoirs, "now that Lithuania was an independent state, such a situation was not normal, since it meant that Lithuania was not yet its own independent party.
The Lithuanian dioceses were ruled by metropolitans outside Lithuania's borders.

The society's first officers were all medical students: Jonas Gaidamavicius, president; Juozas Kaukas, treasurer; and Vincas Kudirka, the future editor of Varpas, secretary.

My maiden name is Simboras, my grandfather was Jonas Simboras during WW2 his wife,child (my dad) and himself immigrated to Australia.
On my grandmother's birth certificate it has both her her parent's (Jonas Sluckus and Cilia Kwitkowski Sluckus) as being born in Russia.
Jonas Sluckus had 2 brothers, Pietas and Contante and there might be a different spelling, such as SLUCKIS or SLUCKA
