Bio: Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonatha Brooke has been issuing albums that merge folk and pop since the early '90s, first as a member of a duo called the Story and then later as a solo artist.
Brooke formed the Story (originally called Jonatha & Jennifer for their first few years together) along with another vocalist, Jennifer Kimball, while the pair was both attending Boston's Amherst College in the early '80s.
In 2004, Brooke performed a set of ten shows at the Public Theater in New York, the highlights of which were collected for the 2006 release of Live in New York, complete with a DVD of the concert.

The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music - Jonatha Brooke   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Jonatha Brooke, formerly one half of The Story, is quickly making a name for herself as one of the most engrossing musicians in folk music today.
Jonatha would do ballerina-like stretches in between songs; she would tease us with nearly a cappella renditions of lounge standards such as "Feelings" and "Muskrat Love"; and she would share with us some of the insights of her compositions.
Jonatha is wonderful; what a lovely voice and lines from her lyrics stay with me all day even though I don't find the music catchy at all.

Squint slightly and you'll see Brooke with an over-exaggerated, slightly cheesy grin on her face, preparing you for the fact that Steady Pull moves away from the darker material found on the veteran singer-songwriter's previous solo work.
But if you tilt your head a certain way, you might think Brooke is wearing a well-meaning snarl, baring her teeth at her personal and professional past, challenging you to get on board with the new Jonatha Brooke, and to sit down, shut up and listen.
Brooke enlisted the help of A-list engineer Bob Clearmountain (who mixed her 1997 effort, 10 Cent Wings) to help produce, and called upon top-notch collaborators such as Crowded House's Neil Finn, Spearhead's Michael Franti and monster bassist Marcus Miller to give the record a pop sheen not previously found on Brooke's work.

George Graham Reviews Jonatha Brooke's "Live"
Brooke as a writer, and as a singer who can pull off her memorable vocals as well on a stage as in the studio, where one can have as many retakes required for perfection.
Brooke was able to re-examine some of the songs from her eight-year recording career, and provide to her fans honest, spirited performances of her subtle, multifaceted songs.
While Jonatha Brooke Live is mainly aimed at her existing fan base, and is primarily being made available through her website, those who have not yet heard this extraordinary singer-songwriter will be in for a treat on this beautiful album.

 Jonatha Brooke: Plumb
Brooke continues using the name The Story, the group's fans would probably be more receptive to this recording if there were not the expectation that the vocal duo's sound would be preserved.
Plumb, the new album by Jonatha Brooke and the Story, represents a significant change from the sound of the vocal duo she had with Jennifer Kimball, which is what the Story used to be.
Brooke has had to find a new approach after her twelve years of collaborating with and writing songs around the pair's distinctive duet harmonies.

George Graham Reviews Jonatha Brooke's "Live"
Brooke's vocals are almost riveting, executing graceful acrobatics and pirouettes in both pitch and dynamics.
It's little wonder that an artists as intelligent and subtle as Jonatha Brooke was dropped by the major label that had rather surprisingly signed her in the first place.
Brooke uses an amplified acoustic guitar the output of which is the guitar sound heard, rather than having the richer sound of the actual acoustic instrument with good microphones in front of it, but it's still a pleasing sound.

Jonatha Brooke: Back in the Circus - PopMatters Music Review
Brooke and her producer-husband Allain Mallet took the delicate-yet-twisted pop melodies and dissonant harmonies of the Story and fleshed them out on Plumb with an edgier, harder-rocking sound and an altogether darker sensibility.
I mention Mallet because Brooke has proven throughout her career to be one of those artists who, for all her obvious native talent, is extremely dependent on her producers for the ultimate success or failure of her music.
Brooke and Freeland's arrangements are frequently too obvious, as on the title track, which they set to a hurdy-gurdy waltz, or the claustrophobic "Sleeping with the Light On", with its fragile, little-girl vocal and stuttering panning effects (though it does at least make great use of a looped toy piano).

The Story began as a duo of two Amherst College friends, Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball, but it was Brooke who wrote the songs, set the vocal arrangements, and took most of the lead vocals.
So it's not a complete surprise that Brooke broke with her partner after a dozen years and recorded this project as Jonatha Brooke and the Story, retaining husband/producer/keyboardist Alain Mallet and guitarist Duke Levine from the previous recordings.
Jonatha has one of the great voices that I've heard.....she is in that catagory of singers (Bowie, Eno, Alanis come to mind) that use their tremendous vocal chops as another instrument in the mix, rather than just singing the songs.

All Things Considered, May 7, 2003 · Singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke is something of an underground sensation, with an adoring fan base built largely on word of mouth and extensive touring with her band.
Brooke constantly tours to promote her CDs, and recently stopped by NPR's studio 4A, along with her band, to chat with NPR's Michele Norris and perform half a dozen songs.
One of Brooke's songs, "Your House," was recorded at a time when she was both falling in love and coming to terms with the fact that her mother may be dying.

Six years after her split with singing partner and Story co-founder Jennifer Kimball, Jonatha Brooke makes another break — this is her first studio album without Alain Mallet, her keyboardist, husband, producer, and musical collaborator since the Story days.
Mallet’s presence was always a mixed blessing: he encouraged the sophisticated jazz turns in Brooke’s songwriting, but he layered her tracks with more synthesizers and world-beat touches than necessary.
Brooke’s usual aces in the hole — her expressive singing and long, graceful melodies — get lost amid the gimmickry.

On this one, Brooke incorporates some drum loops into her usual somewhat folky-pop singer/songwriter music and based on others' reviews I gather this is a bit of a departure for her.
The title track continues the story of a character Jonatha first used on her very first album when she was still part of a duo known as The Story with a Amherst College classmate.

Personal shake-ups seem to agree with Jonatha Brooke, who's pulled her two latest albums out of uncomfortable situations.
The previous one, Plumb (Blue Thumb, 1995), was written in the wake of a split with Jennifer Kimball, her 10-year singing partner in the local folk duo the Story; and the songs were largely prompted by her mixed emotions over the move.
But if Brooke's got some of the tortured artist in her, she's also got some real confidence.

Jonatha Brooke made her reputation as one half of the Story, a duo whose original folk songs were marked by witty wordplay and sumptuous pop harmonies.
After she split with her partner Jennifer Kimball in 1993, Brooke released a solo album (misleadingly credited to "Jonatha Brooke & the Story") that replaced the qualities of her earlier work with a too-bald preachiness.
Brooke seems to have learned her lesson, for her followup solo effort, 10 Cent Wings, is filled with the sort of sly phrases and lush pop arrangements that made the Story so enjoyable.
