  Interview | Jonathan Bennett
Toronto-based writer Jonathan Bennett is one of those literary finds that makes a book critic sit up and take notice.
Bennett was born in Vancouver, but moved to Australia at age four, and his bank of potent sense memories shows through in stories that are clean, uncluttered and deeply evocative.
I sat down with Jonathan Bennett for a nice chat, and came away with a sense of tingling revelation.

In Jonathan Bennett's startling collection of stories, there is one called "Lyrebird," which is loosely inspired by a real event that happened in 1812 in western Sydney.
Bennett is sparse in his language, reflecting the laconic nature of the place; a place where to say too much is to expend energy — something you just don't do in the heat.
To read the talented Bennett's work is to breathe in the eucalypts, hear the magpies warble, and occasionally flinch at a kind of rough justice.

Bennett, Jonathan; Bennett, Jonathan: Kant's Analytic
Bennett's Kant is not a giant immersed, or frozen, in time.
He is a great contemporary - a little out of touch, admittedly, with recent developments in mathematics and physics - but one with whom we can all argue, against him, at his side, or obliquely to him.
And so Bennett does argue, continuously, fiercely, and fruitfully; and summons to join in the argument, at appropriate moments, those older contemporaries, Locke, Leibniz, Berkeley, and Hume, and those younger contemporaries, Wittgenstein, Ryle, Ayler, Quine, Quinton, Warnock, and others.

 Moviehole.net - Interview : Jonathan Bennett
While the film is all about ‘The Plastics’ versus the rest pf the high school body, Jonathan Bennett plays the object of some of their affection and is having a ball working with some of Hollywood’s beauties, as PAUL FISCHER reports.
Jonathan: One thing that I made sure Aaron was was very charming without trying to be charming because, the charm about Aaron Samuels is everybody likes him.
Jonathan: I think the qualities I look for in a girl I’d like to be my girlfriend would be the way Lindsay’s character is before she becomes a plastic.

In these poignant stories, the "verandah people" are author Jonathan Bennett's own compatriots: Australians for whom the ever-present verandah is both a stage and a private viewing space, a shelter from heat and disquieting bushland, and a seductive barrier to participation in the wider world.

Jonathan Bennet’s and Joanne Soper-Cook’s new collections of stories, different as they are from one another, share this echo problem.
Reading the twelve stories in Jonathan Bennett’s Verandah People, I wanted Chekhov’s restless eye to tease this something else into the sentences.
Bennett’s own eye is one of his strengths and I imagine that one day he will reach beyond the stoic fatalists he writes about in this collection, and to better effect.

Review - After Battersea Park by Jonathan Bennett
Bennett executes this parallel construction beautifully, drawing not only links between Curt and William but also links between the struggles of artist expression and facing manhood.
There are times when Bennett’s expression of youthful artistic angst comes off as, well, youthful artistic angst.
Many readers (myself not included) may also find that the author pushes the “image of dualism” button a little too much, constantly reminding the reader that the images, the metaphors of the book are just as “twinned” as the brothers are.

Review | Here Is My Street, This Tree I Planted by Jonathan Bennett
When I spoke with Bennett for January Magazine, I was impressed not just with his soft-spoken yet self-assured manner but by his inner certainty: the sense of steering himself by his own unique creative compass.
Because, he seemed to be telling me, it was the next thing: the thing that tugged at him to be written, and so, with typical integrity and inner poise, poetry is what he wrote.
Certain themes haunt Bennett's work: his emotional dual citizenship in Australia and Canada; the terrifying abyss of the outback and its tendency to swallow the uninitiated and unprepared; the rape of wilderness by urban aggression, man-made ugliness thrusting its way into the midst of natural purity.

Many of the descriptions of behaviour on which our moral thoughts are based are confused; others may be free of confusion, but still we are not clear in our minds about what thoughts they are.
Jonathan Bennett presents conceptual analysis as a means to gaining more control of our thoughts and thus of our lives.
His arguments are simultaneously creative and rigorous, drawing heavily on metaphysics and the philosophy of action to reach some rather startling moral conclusions.
