The Fly Bottle: Jonathan Chait: Confirmation Bias in One Satirical Lesson
jonathan Chait's article, "Fact Finders," in the new TNR is one of the most obnoxiously blinkered pieces of self-serving political magazine writing in recent memory.
Chait's claim is that liberals by and large are empiricists, willing to go where the evidence takes them, while conservatives (loosely and irresponsibly identified with free-market types) are dogmatists who will unaccountably but doggedly cling to principle even after being brought low by data.
Chait: "Incoherence is simply a natural byproduct of of a philosophy rooted in experimentation and a rejection of ideological certainty." I think he thinks he's helping.

Jonathan Chait is now a senior editor for the New Republic, a left-of-center political magazine, but it's not that far left.
Chait's political desires are tied to expectations (and we pray not hopes) of economic disaster and increased danger for American troops abroad.
Chait chronicles in his article a list of policy disagreements and reveals an abiding aggravation that Bush is perceived as a moderate conservative, while Chait and his friends at the New Republic and the American Prospect view Bush's tax cuts as "radical." However, these remain just policy disagreements.

Jonathan Chait has mistakenly embraced the old theory of "crowding out"—the idea that government borrowing invariably crowds out private investment by driving up the cost of money.
Chait argues that interest rates are the key to growth and that deficit reduction has kept interest rates low in the late 1990s.
Chait also suggests that the government's revised statistics indicate there was not much improvement in productivity until after the deficit reduction was in place.

As for Howard Dean, Chait correctly argues that Dean is a mistake because he fires up the Democratic base and only the base, which isn't enough to win the election, and Dean's secularism won't play well in an electorate deeply concerned over "cultural" issues.
Chait also contends that Dean's ability to fire up the base was inconsequential since the base was already fired up.
But, as Chait points out, she isn't charismatic, and her single accomplishment is to have won a senate race in an extremely liberal state, "where she ran six percentage points behind Al Gore." Chait, in responding to the claim that Hillary's not as liberal as people think, says:

Jonah Goldberg's Goldberg File on National Review Online
Chait's piece — as much as it pains me to say it — is actually pretty good.
Chait's most interesting concession — and a point which has been made by myself and many, many, others in the past — is that the media isn't so much willfully biased as inclined to follow certain story lines.
Chait does note that some liberals are described as "unreconstructed liberals." Indeed, he says "over the last decade, major newspapers have used the pejorative phrase 'unreconstructed liberal' more than five times as often as they've used 'unreconstructed conservative.'" Therefore, he asks, "Why isn't this disparity evidence of anti-liberal bias?"

Jonathan Chait’s latest anti-Bush screed is penned out of an apparent insecurity over fitness.
Chait Dowd-fully references the morning of September 11 with the unrelated fact that the President went running prior to reading to those kids in Florida.
This disturbs Chait as he gravely opines, “Given the importance of his job, it is astonishing how much time Bush has to exercise.” Well, Jonathan, given the importance of the job, it’s a testament to the president’s leadership abilities that he has managed to surround himself with a competent team that gets things done.

Power Line: Best of PL: Chaitred
What distinguishes Chait is his argument that hating the President is "a logical response to the events of the last few years." In Chait's telling, it is President Bush's fault that Democrats hate him.
Chait thinks that Bush "sold" the war by "playing upon the public's erroneous belief that Saddam had some role in the September 11 attacks." This claim has become a part of the liberal catechism, but it isn't true.
Chait entirely avoids any consideration of the possibiltiy that his hatred is symptomatic of underlying liberal sickness by attempting to make the case that the hatred is unique to President Bush.

The New Republic's Jonathan Chait writes in response to Dean's flag gaffe: "What's alarming here is not that Dean wants to win votes from guys with Confederate flags on their pickup trucks.
But once you think about it, it’s not really that big a deal; a guy like Jonathan is typically talking to journalists and analysts and other outsiders every week, sometimes every day; so this in fact is probably a lower-risk activity, since he’s not being intermediated by someone who might have their own agenda.
Jonathan said, “I’ve already written nine, this is great, every time I think of something that needs saying I can just say it!” I think that guy’s hooked.

What strikes me more this time is that Chait and other lefties tempted to make this argument need to remember the other side of their brain's focus on the "vast right-wing conspiracy," which is full of all of these "corporate-funded" think tanks all over the place.

What Chait convienently avoids noticing is that progressive socialist liberals are the ones that screwed up the U.S. tax system in the first place.
Because of the failure of communism, socially, politically, and economically, Chait must attempt to disassociate himself and liberal socialists from it, and try to pin a new association (with communism) on conservatives, the true enemy of communism.
