 Authors and Creators: Jonathan Latimer
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jonathan Latimer was educated in Arizona and Illinois.
Like Hammett's Nick and Nora, Latimer's Bill Crane was a booze-soaked, seemingly-inept detective who somehow always managed, despite always being either drunk or hung over, to crack the case, despite the ponderous and copious intake of a variety of intoxicating substances.
Latimer published at least one more classic, 1941's Solomon's Vineyard, a true hardboiled classic, and pretty hot stuff, evidently, at least in the eyes of the protectors of American decency.

 JONATHAN LATIMER, by John Fraser
Latimer looks better and better as the years go by, at least to those of us who unregenerately revel in thrillers and are grateful for gusto and intelligent humour wherever we find them.
Latimer’s books are all distinctively his own, except for the Golden-Age-country-houser The Search for My Great-Uncle’s Head (1937, under the name of Peter Coffin) and the straightforward and probably à clef movie-business whodunit Black is the Fashion for Dying (1959).
I betcha Latimer, not yet a screenwriter himself, took elements from that for Headed for a Hearse, with its innocent man, hardened criminal, and unpleasant turnkey.

Fans of Latimer who have only read his screwball comedy mysteries about drunken PI Bill Crane will quite surprised by this tough story, which is probably one of the 10 best hard boiled tales of all time.
Published in 1941, Jonathan Latimer's Solomon's Vineyard "had" to be cut by those who were incensed (i.e., censors) at its for-the-time unheard of sexual frankness.
As the other reviewer here said, and I completely agree, Latimer's style is akin to Hammett's--sparse, lean prose whose dialogue has all the juice of its time, giving the tale a lip-smacking feel of hardboiled life for the era it portrays.

American screenwriter Jonathan Latimer "typed" himself as a specialist in mysteries with his first Hollywood assignment, The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt (1939).
Latimer did all right for himself with such atmospheric thrillers as The Glass Key (1942), Nocturne (1946), They Won't Believe Me (1947) and The Big Clock (1948), with the occasional time out for such frothier fare as Topper Returns.
Jonathan Latimer's last credit was the British The Whole Truth (1958), slated for RKO release but ultimately distributed by Columbia.
