Jonathan McCully was born in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, in July 1809.
In 1848 McCully was appointed a member of the legislative council and moved to Halifax to be near his work.
Archibald chose McCully who was at the time leader of the opposition in the legislative council.

McCully was appointed judge of probate in 1853, an office he held until after the change of government in 1857, when he was duly fired.
McCully had the pleasure of seeing some of his efforts on behalf of William Young*, Howe, and the Liberals bear fruit, for in 1860 the Liberals (the name “Reformers” was falling out of use now) returned to power.
McCully was bound to support Tupper and the better terms of 1869, but he seems not to have been influential in the negotiations for Howe’s entering the John A. Macdonald* government in 1869.

She found reference to a Samuel McCully who apparently had come to Nova Scotia from Northern Ireland in the 1760s, and thought she had found the father of John McCully, Sally's great-great-grandfather, the earliest ancestor for whom there was any very family definite information.
For "William of Masstown": The first record of a William McCULLY in Nova Scotia is in the 1770 Londonderry census, in a household comprised of a man, a woman, and a male child.
McCULLY [1890-1988], as the great grand-nephew of Jonathan McCULLY - one of the Nova Scotia "Fathers of Confederation" - suggests these are descendants of "William of Masstown", probably through his son, the Reverend Samuel McCULLY [1773-1849] of Amherst, Nova Scotia.

He died at his home in (Provincial capital and largest city of Nova Scotia) Halifax on January 2, 1877 and was buried in that city at Camp Hill Cemetery.
Although he took a marginal role at the conferences at Charlottetown and Québec City he was an important promoter of union to Nova Scotians through editorials in both the Morning Chronicle and the Unionist & Halifax Journal.
For his support of Confederation, McCully was appointed to the (additional info and facts about Senate of Canada) Senate of Canada in 1867.

After receiving his education locally, Jonathan McCully, took teaching as his first profession.
In 1847 McCully was appointed to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia and subsequently served as solicitor-general, commissioner-general for railways, and eventually emerged as leader of the government.
