		Motzfeldt said there was a need for a mechanism to facilitate coordination and direction with respect to indigenous issues and suggested that the Commission establish an open-ended Ad Hoc Group which would draw up a draft mandate for a permanent forum for indigenous peoples within the United Nations.

		Motzfeldt was Greenland's first premier from 1979 until 1991, when he was ousted by Lars-Emil Johansen.

		The representative of Greenland at the meeting is member of parliament for the leftist party IA, Josef Motzfeldt, who recently formed government with the socialdemocratic Siumut party.
		IA is working for a demilitarization of Greenland, as well as a greater degree of independence from Denmark, including matters of foreign policy, so it could be difficult to make Greenland endorse the NMD.
