  Erowid Jonathan Ott Vault
Jonathan Ott is a prolific and highly regarded writer, translator, publisher, reviewer and pundit on virtually every aspect of entheogen botany, chemistry, pharmacology, bioassay, culture, and history.
The term entheogen itself is most closely attributed to him; he was one of the people who helped coin it, and its propogation as a meme is due in large part to its use in his books.
Jonathan Ott is arguably one of the most devoted heads - or "pharmacophiles" in the Ott family of words -- in the world.

As Jonathan Ott points out, the types of cultures that used entheogens were different from cultures with an organized, hierarchical religion that involved a priesthood.
It seems plain that despite the war of the U.S. government on illicit drugs, a war alluded to bitterly by many of the conference's attendees and speakers, the use of entheogens continues to exert a fascination on a sector of the population which may not be enthralled with drugs overall.
Dr Ott says that to view the entheogen as a trinket, "dope," is debasing to the native shaman.

PHARMACOTHEON.

Jonathan methodically deconstructs the prevalent "conventional wisdom" which vociferously pushes to keep certain drugs illegal while other, more dangerous drugs are institutionalized into daily life.
Some of Jonathan’s intentions in disseminating this information are to present viable alternatives to ‘‘ayahuasca tourism’’ and to stimulate an interest in further research of the existing (and potentially) psychoactive plants which may be found in one’s own environment.
Ott gives personal insight into Wasson’s work on entheogens and the origin of religion and concludes with a poetic reading of his ode to Phytomphalos, which truly moved the audience.

After reviewing carefully the ethnobotanical, chemical and pharmacognostical literature on the "Amazonian Amrta", Ott describes more than three dozen psychonautic experimants designed to elucidate the incredible pharmacology of ayahuasca potions, ingenious amalgamations of extracts from ayahuasca liana, which contain enzyme inhibitors, and extracts of leaves of other plants containing DMT a potent entheogen ordinarily inactive orally.
Ott boldly characterizes the discovery of ayahuasca potions by various groups of South American Indians as "one of the most sophisticated pharmcognostical discoveries of all antiquity."
These are the Ayahuasca Analogues of the book's title, and Ott's psychonautic experiments include several with such "analogues", as well as with pharmahuasca - the pure alkaloids in capsule form.
