Penrose spent the academic year 1956-57 as an Assistant Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at Bedford College, London and was then appointed as a Research Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge.
One of Penrose's major breakthroughs was his introduction of twistor theory in an attempt to unite relativity and quantum theory.

Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose have proposed a theory of the quantum mind in which the hollow cores of microtubules inside neurons form an environment capable of supporting quantum coherence and quantum-scale information processing and conscious awareness.
A critical flaw in the Penrose theory is that it relies on the microtubules having two interchangable states that are equally likely and in continual interconversion.
While the GDP vs. GTP bound states of tubulin allow for this possibility and thus Penrose's theory, the empirical data has shown that all microtubules are composed of only 13 or 26 GTP bound tubulin at the ends.
