When Speelman gets unhappy with his position almost anything can happen, and his opponents are chronically aware of the "swindling hazard" they incur by gaining an advantage against him.

This is a well known position in the Four Knights Variation and GM Jon Speelman had presumably been there many times before, but at that time Jonathan had little theory and was gazing at the position with the same blank stare that must have crossed Cortes' face when he first stumbled upon the Aztec civilisation.
Jonathan feels retrospective embarrassment at not holding what he even now sees as "a winning position", but he has in my view nothing to chide himself with.
Jonathan has subsequently reflected on the regulatory rules under which simuls are played and makes some interesting observations about how the conditions affected him.
