Wainwright was laid down on 1 September 1914 at Camden, New Jersey, by the New York Shipbuilding Company; launched on 12 June 1915; sponsored by Miss Evelyn Wainwright Turpin; and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 12 May 1916, Lt. Fred H. Poteet in command.
Wainwright then fired several rounds from her 4-inch guns at what was thought to be a periscope.
